Assassin's Creed Valhalla Players Are Loving The In-Game Cat Recruitment

It's been a big week for cats in gaming. First of all, we got to grips with Spider-Cat in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and now, Assassin's Creed Valhalla has shown off its own furry friend. If you haven't already recruited a cat to your Viking longship, rest assured, this is the "purrfect" addition to your squad.

In Assassin's Creed Valhalla, you pick up your battleaxe as the Viking warrior called Eivor. Playing as either male or female, Eivor (eventually) sets sail for Britain and throws themself into the Anglo-Saxon war. Although there's Eivor's brother Sigurd to accompany you on some of your quests, the fact you can take a cat with you is an altogether better travelling companion.

Can you pet the cat in Assasin's Creed Valhalla?

There's a whole subsect of gamers that are obsessed with looking at animals in video games, leading to the popular "Can You Pet the Dog?" Twitter. It's here that we see Eivor pick up the Valhalla cat, confirming, yes, you can pet the cat. What's possibly the most shocking part of this is the sheer size of the cats. We know Vikings are large in stature, so it looks like their cats are on the same diet.

Be warned petting some dogs in Assassin's Creed Valhalla isn't as easy. There are plenty of man's best friends knocking around, but not all are pettable dogs. Okay, so Ubisoft labels some as wolves, so trying to pet them will lead to them surrounding you and apparently eating your horse. You've been warned. Petting the cat is one thing, however, did you know you can also add the cat to your longship as a good luck charm for all your nautical warfare?

How do you recruit the cat in Assassin's Creed Valhalla?

To recruit a cuddly cat, you'll need to complete the “Freyja’s Friend” side-quest. This is one of the secret side-quests that is only accessible when you've landed in Britain. Head to Norwich and look for a white cat near the big red gate. Although it's hard to miss, the fact it's a secret mission means it won't show up on your map or compass.

A small child will ask you to help them catch the cat. It's easier said than done, and if the cat runs off, you'll have to move to the next location to grab it. It's reminiscent of grabbing Mips the rabbit in Super Mario 64, which was by far one of the acclaimed title's most annoying tasks. When you eventually capture the white cat, you'll be able to recruit it to your longship. The cat will sit proudly near the front as your new mascot.

Weirdly, there are several cat-based missions in Assassin's Creed Valhalla for when you're bored of hacking British soldiers to pieces. Back in Assassin’s Creed Origins, Bayek could pet the cat, however, Valhalla takes it to a whole new level. With your new recruit, you'll look like the cat that got the cream.
