Apex Legends Devs Hint At Possible TV Series

If you're ready for a Titan-sized bit of speculation, Respawn Entertainment has sent the Apex Legends fandom into overdrive, with hints that an Apex Legends TV series could be in the works. As the hero shooter continues to find it stride and introduce new Legends on a regular basis, could it be time to swap World's Edge and Kings Canyon for a streaming service near you?

While video game adaptations were once confined to abysmal movie outings including Super Mario Bros. and the Dwayne Johnson-led DOOM, there's been a recent resurgence in the genre on the small screen. Following in the footsteps of The WitcherResident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and The Last of UsApex Legends might be next on the docket for the likes of Netflix.

What's the Apex Legends TV series rumours?

During a Reddit Ask Me Anything, Respawn Director of Community and Communications Ryan K. Rigney was directly asked about the possibility of a "Nextflix/Amazon Prime TV series". Instead of completely debunking the idea, Rigney but a cryptic emoji with its mouth zipped closed. It's entirely possible he's just trolling fans, however, it was enough to spark a huge debate about how an Apex TV series should play out.

One fan simply wrote, "An Apex Netflix series would break records, and you guys know it", and we've got to agree. It's important to remember that Apex Legends' relatively newcomer status (coming out in 2019), means that a series can't have been in the works for long. Maybe it's this that sparked Rigney's vague response? Ironically, Game Director Chad Grenier told GamesRadar how he'd love to make an animated Apex Legends TV series for Netflix. When Season 6 launched, Grenier told the site, "I would love to do that. That sounds awesome. A Netflix animated series of Apex? Sign me up!"

Should we get an Apex Legends TV series?

Only recently, there's been a surge in live-action video game ensembles. Alongside Simon McQuoid's Mortal Kombat reboot, there's also Eli Roth's Borderlands with huge names like Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart. Apex Legends could easily work as a movie, but in terms of getting the most out of the colourful cast of character, the extended format of a series arguably work better. The question is, should it be live-action or animated?

Although an animated Apex Legends would be easier to do, just imagine the potential all-star talent a live-action TV series could add. Then again, we dread to think what the budget would be on a live-action series. Considering Grenier has already mused the idea of a Netflix series, it makes a lot of sense that one could be on the way. Apex Legends has a massive player count, launched on the Nintendo Switch, and has a mobile version in the works, meaning there's a lot of buzz around it right now. Will we get our wish of an Apex Legends TV series? Watch this space.
