It's another big moment for Activision and the Call of Duty name as its success in 2020 continues to be unparalleled. Following the news that Activision has made a jaw-dropping $3 billion off its various CoD titles in 2020, the company has also confirmed the Call of Duty: Warzone playerbase has hit 85 million. Given that a lot of the publisher's success in the past 12 months was put down to Warzone's meteoric rise, is it any real surprise the battle royale shooter has reached such a lofty peak?

Call of Duty has become an increasingly popular franchise for Activision as it has continued to churn out titles year-on-year. This year was a little different as the battle royale-inspired Call of DutY: Warzone launched and joined previously released titles Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Mobile. Alongside the recent release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, this quartet of games has kept players hooked in the midst of a global pandemic and raked in some serious dough for Activision. Despite each having their highs and lows, Warzone has been the shining star of 2020.

85 million Warzone players - How was it done?

Heading back to Warzone's release back in March, it amassed a massive following of 30 million players in just three weeks. Now, an Activision press release has confirmed we're currently at 85 million players.  Looking at the facts and figures, it's been a steady climb to where we are today that's made Warzone a surprise gaming giant of 2020. There's no taking away from this impressive feat, however, it is a slower trajectory than earlier in the game's lifespan. In May, Warzone smashed past 60 million players, meaning the other 25 have been scooped up over the past seven months.

If you thought 85 million Warzone players was impressive enough, we're surely going to see that number rise thanks to the upcoming integration with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. While we're not sure what's going on with Modern Warfare and whether there will ever be Season 7, Black Ops Cold War Season 1 is just over the horizon and is set to rework the game from the ground up. Leaks are everywhere right now, with the biggest being news of an Alcatraz-inspired event dubbed "Rebirth Island".

85 million Warzone players - What's next?

Brian Beede, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Call of Duty, promised this is just the start of the Warzone journey. Discussing what's next, Beede explained, "This is the next great chapter in Black Ops with an amazing campaign, an all-new zombies experience and of course, high-octane multiplayer. Launch is only the beginning. We are focused on building a continuous pipeline featuring a tremendous amount of free, post-launch content and events across the franchise.”

Previously, it was a case of a new game coming and the old one dying off. Although that's inevitable with Modern Warfare, Activision, Treyarch, and Infinity Ward are holding on a bit longer and keeping all their CoD eggs in one Warzone basket. Pending the reboot season's already frustrating delay to December 16, Cold War and Warzone should be coming together for a union of the ages. We'll be a keep a close eye on the facts and figures to see if Warzone continues to claw its way to the top of its game or it has peaked too soon.
