After deciding on an item, simply press L on your controller to open up the item menu, then highlight the object that you wish to use as a gift. Now that you’ve found the item in your inventory, press A to hold it, and walk over to the person that you wish to give it to. All you need to do now is Press A again to hand it over to them. 

As a result, a message should appear, as the villager will react to the gift in either a positive or negative manner. It’s up to you to decipher whether or not the gift exchange was a success, but a hint will usually appear to help you out with this endeavour. Additionally, you will want to talk to everyone each day, as you may discover the date for their birthday. Gifting an item on their birthday will give you some extra friendship points, so make sure to interact with everyone when possible.
