It’s Valentine’s season, so the Pokemon GO Love Cup is in full force! This is a special themed tournament in the Pokemon GO Battle League with some specific rules, which means potential combatants need to formulate a team that will succeed within the constraints. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Here’s what you need to know about the best team for the Pokemon GO Love Cup along with all the rules in the event.

Pokemon GO Love Cup Rules

The Love Cup is like many other special tournaments, in that it only allows certain Pokemon to participate. Here are the two rules:

  1. Pokemon must be CP 1,500 or lower
  2. Pokemon must be red or pink in colour

Of course, some Pokemon that meet the second criteria have CP too high to participate, such as Legendary Pokemon (Groudon, Latias, etc). But, any Pokemon you have that meets those two rules is eligible.

Now that you know the rules, you're probably trying to figure out which Pokemon will be the best to bring into battle. There are definitely some contenders that will serve better than others, so let’s get right into it.

Building the best Pokemon GO Love Cup team requires a balance between the strongest Pokemon that many people will probably use, and Pokemon that can counter those. As a result, many of the best Pokemon will be those that can fill both roles. Here are some of the best Pokemon, sorted by type:

Fairy: Wigglytuff, Clefable, and Aromatisse

All three of these ‘mons are capable of using the fast move Charm, which is considered one of the best in the league. If you have the candy and Stardust, it can be a good idea to give them a second charge move or a teammate that can counter their big weakness in Poison-types.

Poison: Galarian Slowbro, Scolipede, and Vileplume

Speaking of Poison-types — they’ll be great to bring to counter all the pesky Fairy-types that you’re likely to see. Some of the top picks are these Pokemon, listed above. Be sure to cover Scolipede and Vileplume’s Fire-type weakness with a Water or Rock Pokemon.

Flying/Fire: Talonflame and Charizard

These two fiery flyers are considered some of the best in the Pokemon GO Love Cup meta. They’re able to effectively cover Fair-types given Fire’s resistance to Charm, and they’ll be good counters to Vileplume, Scolipede, and Fighting-types like Medicham and Scrafty.

Others: Druddigon, Medicham, Alomomola, and The Rest

There are some other ‘mons that will make good members of your team to help plug in the holes. Druddigon can deal good damage to Pokemon that resist the rest of your team, as Dragon is only resisted by Steel and Fairy. Dragon-types also resist Fire, Grass, Electric, and Water, giving them some utility against many Pokemon.

Medicham will be a great choice for taking down Steel-types like Trash Wormadam and Poison-types like Scolipede and Galarian Slowbro. Be sure not to use it against the many, many Fairy-types you’ll see, though.

Alomomola is being chosen by many pro players. It has decent bulk and its Water-typing will be great against Talonflame, Charizard, and Magcargo, which look to be pretty big threats. Pairing Alomomola with a Charm-using Fairy-type can be a deadly combo for your opponents.

Other Pokemon that might be great to choose include the following:

  • Milotic
  • Trash Wormadam
  • Ariados
  • Seaking
  • Scizor
  • Electrode
