Following yesterday's announcement on the official Rocket League website, Psyonix confirmed that after almost five years that for PC, Rocket League will be moving from the Steam store to the Epic Games store where it will be free to download on PC.

Rocket League will also become free to download from the Xbox and Playstation stores for consoles, and the eShop for Nintendo Switch.

Existing players who have paid for the game will be rewarded with an array of customisation rewards, such as:

  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner
  • "Est.20xx" player title, which will display the first year that you played Rocket League
  • 200+ common items upgraded to 'Legacy' quality

Existing players will also be granted all Rocket League-Branded DLC which is released before free to play Rocket League becomes available.

For PC players, with the transition to the Epic Games Store, Rocket League will become unavailable to download through Steam, however, if you already have it downloaded on Steam, you will have no problems accessing the full game. Whether you're on Steam or through Epic Games Store, the game will work exactly the same.

Rocket League isn't the first came to make a transition from Steam to become free to play, following suit from Counter-Strike and Dota 2, which all made the transition to attract larger audiences. Psyonix has seemingly been pushing to grow the audiences for Rocket League, ever since making it accessible through the Olympic Games and broadcasted live on television, and becoming free to play will attract a large number of players heading over to play football with rocket-powered cars. With the loss of income through game sales, it's likely that we'll also see some exciting features in the store.

The release date for Rocket League becoming free to play has yet to be determined, however, it has been confirmed to be 'this summer' indicating that it will be by available before the end of August.

Stay tuned at GGRecon for more Rocket League news.
