The world of New Pokemon Snap has introduced a new type of creature that has perplexed and intrigued fans. The Illumina Pokemon are mysteriously vibrant and glowing Pokemon that are hailed as the protectors of the Lental region, and it’s down to you to gather some snaps of them under Professor Mirror’s orders.

But, the trouble is, they’re pretty tricky to find. Illumina orbs might give a momentary shine to regular Pokemon, but it’s those that inherently glow you’ll want to grab pictures of the most. Their hideaways are often hard to find, but there are ways of finding them. Here’s how you can get snaps of the region’s shiniest Pokemon.

What Are New Pokemon Snap’s Illumina Pokemon?

The Illumina Pokemon in the game are as follows;

  • Meganium, in the Florio Nature Park
  • Wishiwashi, in the Maricopia Islands
  • Milotic, in the Belusylva Islands
  • Volcarona, in the Voluca Islands
  • Steelix, on Durice Island
  • Xerneas, in the Ruins of Remembrance

They’re all tucked away in their own ways, and have their own tactics to lure them out. Here’s how you can find them and get the all-important snaps you need to complete Mirror’s mission.

Illumina Pokemon: Meganium

Likely the first Illumina Pokemon you’ll come across, and one you’ll recognise from the game’s marketing, Illumina Meganium can be found in the Florio Nature Park once you’ve completed the nighttime version of the area. A Meganium will appear at the end of your course, and the Illumina phenomenon will occur as the Pokemon sniffs a crystabloom.

Illumina Pokemon: WishiWashi

Wishiwashi is a bit of a tougher Pokemon to snap. Firstly, you’re going to need to increase Blushing Beach and Maricopa Reef to research level two, unlocking the Undersea of the Lental Seafloor. Unlock the first alternate path of the stage, and gather all of the Illumina orbs you can.

There will be some Wishiwashi kicking about, but you’ll need to hit every single one with an Illumina orb to squeeze them into School Form. It’s in this form the Pokemon will become the Illumina Pokemon you need to capture - snap it once they’ve come together, and you’re all set!

The Illumina spot for Belusylva is in Elsewhere Forest, and you can unlock it by raising the research level of the area to 2. It’ll take you there automatically, and you just have to hit the Milotic with a fluffruit and then an Illumina orb to snap it, and the Illumina Pokemon of the area is completed. Easy!

Illumina Pokemon: Volcarona

To get your snap of the sun Pokemon, you’ll once again have to raise the respective area to research level 2 - this time in Fireflow Volcano. Inside, there will be two Illumina Volcarona, but you’ll only have to photograph one of them. Hit it with two fluffruit and then an Illumina orb, and you’re done!

Illumina Pokemon: Steelix

Steelix is a notably tough Pokemon to photograph in New Pokemon Snap. Get Outaway Cave to research level 2, take the alternate route to the crystal caves in the last room, and get in some scans and photographs of the ruins there. Steelix will be hiding in one of the holes there, but you won’t know until you’ve thrown a fluffruit into the right one. Once you’ve got the right one, throw an Illumina orb at it. Be quick though, as the effect will only last as long as it’s out of the holes!

Illumina Pokemon: Xerneas

Finally, the legendary Xerneas can be found in the last unlockable stage, the Ruins of Remembrance. You can unlock the Illumina spot by lighting up each of the crystablooms in the stage. Xerneas will transform into an orb and float around the stage as you slowly follow it. If you can hit it with enough Illumina orbs, it will briefly transform back into its Pokemon form. Snap it here, but it’s unlikely you’ll get one worth four stars on the first go. Keep it up through the stage, and you’re bound to have a top-quality Xerneas snap by the end!

New Pokemon Snap’s Illumina Pokemon might be elusive, but good photos of them will take you one step closer to finally completing the game. Good luck out there, and happy hunting!
