Now that we’re snapping all over the Lental Region in New Pokemon Snap and we’ve got more pictures of Zubat than we can fit in our pockets, we’re itching to get our hands on snaps of the rarest Pokemon the game has to offer. Pokemon rarity has always been a leading feature of the games’ design, whether they be mainline or spin-off, and New Pokemon Snap is no different. Here are the beasties you need to be keeping a sharp eye on…

Pokemon Snap’s Rarest Pokemon

New Pokemon Snap - Jirachi

The mythical Jirachi is one of the many Pokemon you’ll find hiding in plain sight, but they’ll do you well in way of reward when you finally get a snap of them. You’ll find them in amongst the Eldegloss right at the start of the Ruins of Remembrance zone. However, it’s worth noting that you won’t be able to find them unless you’ve already completed the game. It’s one to come back to for sure, but it’ll be worth it.

You can also find Jirachi at the end of the zone too - light up all of the Pokemon statues at the end of the area, and they’ll make another appearance, giving you another chance to get that four-star snap.

New Pokemon Snap - Lugia

The immense diving Pokemon Lugia is hidden away in New Pokemon Snap, and is a particularly tough one to find. When you’re on the Lental seafloor, take the first path to your left to find a Lanturn floating about. Thow an Illumina Orb at it before it has a chance to escape, and a myriad of new Pokemon will appear. You’ll see that the Lanturn has been seized by a couple of Frillish - throw another Illumina Orb at the and Lanturn will be freed. As your reward for its rescue, the Pokemon will open up a new hidden path, that will take you right to Lugia, waiting for its glamour shot.

New Pokemon Snap - Mew

It’ll come as no surprise that Mew, perhaps the Pokemon series’ most revered legendary creature, will be a tough one to find in New Pokemon Snap. Similar to Jirachi, though, they’re hidden just out of sight at the very start of a level. Go to the Founja Jungle area at night time, and the moment you drop into the level, turn around.

You’ll see two Morelull looking at you - play them a song on your music player, and a pink orb will appear. Throw a Flufffruit at it, and Mew will arrive on screen for a short period. Take the snap quick before they’re gone again!

New Pokemon Snap - Suicune

There are a few steps to capturing Suicune, so bear with us. Go to Shiver Snowfields during the daytime, and take a snap of the Sandslash just to your right as you start. Another Sandslash will appear on the cliff to your left, and you’ll need to snap them too. Then, later on, you’ll see a Swinub trying to climb a slope, and another Sandslash will appear nearby. Take a picture of them, and they’ll dig a hole that opens an alternative path. You can take this path if you like, but you only have to finish the level at this stage.

Then, return to the area at night time. Enter the new path to find a Crabominable hitting a tree, and throw an Illumina Orb at them. An Abomasnow will appear, and his actions will bring out a Froslass. Take a picture of the Froslass, and they’ll open yet another secret path. Follow this path until you reach a body of water, and see a Jynx riding an Avalugg (it’s strange, we know). Finally, throw a final Illumina Orb at the Jynx, and the legendary aurora Pokemon will rise from the water. Phew.

New Pokemon Snap - Ho-Oh

If you’re an avid fan of the original Pokemon anime series, you’ll know that Ho-Oh is a pretty big deal in the world of mythical Pokemon. So, it makes sense that they’re one of the hardest creatures to snap in the game - but they’re hard to photograph for rather a different reason than the others on this list.

The trouble is, Ho-Oh’s appearances are completely random. There’s absolutely no guarantee that when you enter the Fireflow Volcano zone that you’ll be able to spot them, but on one of your playthroughs, eventually they’ll show up. We can’t promise you an effective strategy, but all we can say is keep your camera to the skies, and cross your fingers. Good luck.

These five Pokemon are far and away the most difficult creatures to photograph in New Pokemon Snap. The game might have already made a name for itself as an incredibly chilled out gaming experience, but if you’re willing to exert yourself for a short while, you’ll come away with some magnificent bragging rights, and some excellent photos of the Lental region’s most elusive Pokemon.
