If you’ve just purchased the Burning Shores DLC for Horizon Forbidden West, then you’re likely wondering how to play it. While we all love a bit of DLC expansion content for our favourite games, it can sometimes be a bit finicky when it comes to actually accessing what’s new.

Thankfully, the Burning Shores DLC for Horizon Forbidden West is super easy to find once you start up the game, letting you dive into everything new for Aloy and the gang.

Prerequisites to playing the Burning Shores DLC

Firstly, it’s worth noting that the Burning Shores DLC is only available on PS5. Those who played Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 are fresh out of luck, as they won’t be able to play the Burning Shores DLC unless they upgrade.

If you do have Burning Shores installed on your PS5, though, accessing the DLC is very simple. However, there is a huge prerequisite you’ll need to complete first: The DLC is only accessible once you have completed the main questline of Horizon Forbidden West.

If you haven’t already done this, you’ll need to spend around 30 hours completing the main story. This is because Burning Shores serves as an epilogue of sorts to the main game’s story. If you haven’t already seen what happens at the end of the game, Burning Shores will spoil it for you.

How to start the West Burning Shores DLC

Beware of spoilers ahead for the ending of Horizon Forbidden West.

Once you have a save file in which you’ve completed the main story of Horizon Forbidden West, then you’re ready to start the Burning Shores DLC. Load up the game, and you’ll be greeted with a splash screen that indicates that the DLC has been installed. Next, follow these steps:

  • Shortly after loading into the game, you’ll be contacted by Sylens, the mysterious character who you interact with through Horizon Forbidden West. He will ask you to meet him at Tilda’s mansion as part of the quest ‘To the Burning Shores’.
  • Follow the quest marker to find Sylens at Tilda’s mansion and speak with him. Once you have exhausted all of the dialogue options he has, you will eventually be presented with the option to travel to the Burning Shores.

Once you accept this prompt, you will be shown a short cutscene before landing in the new Burning Shores area. Now, you’re free to roam around the new area of the game world and complete the DLC storyline.
