Best Upcoming Games 2022: Pokemon Legends Arceus (January)

While there are an innumerable amount of Pokemon games, Pokemon Legends Arceus easily stands out as one of the most exciting of the series, as well as one of the best upcoming games of 2022. Taking the Pokemon franchise to an open world for the first time, Arceus is an expansive RPG experience that fans have been dreaming of for years. Taking the series to a feudal setting, there is exciting promise that Arceus could be the launching point for a new series which could explore different settings in the Pokemon universe.

Best Upcoming Games 2022: Dying Light 2 (February)

While it seems like a lifetime since it was first announced, Dying Light 2 makes it into our best upcoming games of 2022, for being so damn ambitious. This zombie-fuelled sequel is blowing the doors off of what was done in the first game, with an enormous open world, branching narrative, and improved first person melee combat and parkour. There will be some serious consequence to your actions, which will range from characters dying to entire districts of the world's map being discovered or entirely missed. Oh and who doesn't love swiping off zombie limbs with all manner of weapons? Exactly.

Best Upcoming Games 2022: Sifu

One of the smaller titles on this list, Sifu fuses that infamous corridor fight in Oldboy with an aging looping mechanic that introduces light rogue-like features. You will fight your way through waves of enemies in tight-knit environments where everything from a bar ledge to an ottoman can be a weapon. With smooth and seamless kung-fu combat, players will earn points and upgrade skills which they'll lose if they die, making Sifu a tense and highly replayable entry when it drops.

Robot dinosaurs and the post-post-apocalypse is too good a premise to pass up, and that's why this gorgeous sequel makes it into our best upcoming games of 2022. Aloy is back, and this time she will venture off to the (forbidden) west coast, in hopes of stopping a world poisoning virus spreading its roots across the globe. With the new colourful setting, Horizon Forbidden West is going to show off the true capabilities of PS5, with some of the most detailed environments we've ever seen. Our ears are hurting at the mere thought of the PS4 fans going off trying to run this one.

Best Upcoming Games 2022: Elden Ring (February)

Release Date: February 25 

Regardless of what games it would be stacked up against, Elden Ring would always be one of the best upcoming games of any year that it released. FromSoftware left fans in a frenzy for this George R.R. Martin collaboration, which is taking the Soulsborne formula to the open world. With new haunting enemy designs, a spine-tingling score, and new hefty lore to set in about, Elden Ring is shaping up to be FromSoftware's magnum opus.

Best Upcoming Games 2022: Starfield (November)

It's done the post-apocalypse and it's done a proper fantasy game. Now it's time for Bethesda to go all in on sci-fi. Starfield is being touted as a grand and ambitious RPG from the Skyrim and Fallout developer and from the small snippets we've seen, there is a true epic sense of scale to it. This is a new-gen exclusive that will follow the last group of space explorers as they travel to the deepest reaches of the settled systems.

God of War (2018) reinvigorated a faded icon of PlayStation's catalogue of franchises. Switching up perspectives, going hard for narrative, and switching out a Greek setting for Norse mythology, it blew fans away. Now the sequel, God of War Ragnarok, is upon us, and it will see out the new storyline that has characters like Kratos, Atreus, Thor, and Freya coming to blows with each other after the events of the first game. We don't quite know how this story is going to go, but we do know that it is going to be epic, emotional and is certainly one of the best upcoming games of 2022.

Best Upcoming Games 2022: Gotham Knights

After the disastrous launch of Marvel's Avengers, all hopes are pinned on Gotham Knights as the next big superhero title as well as one of the best upcoming games of 2022. This online co-op superhero romp sounds like a DC delight as players take on the roles of Batgirl, NightWing, Red Hood, and Robin. Soaring through Gotham City after the death of the Batman, this alternate universe take of the Arkham series will be a massive adventure that fans can sink dozens of hours into. Gotham Knights will feature some of the series iconic villains and promises to be a deep yet recognizable combat experience with seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op.

Arkane hasn't ever really missed, so it is of no surprise that Redfall is one of our best upcoming games. Coming from Arkane Austin who were behind the superbly underrated Prey, Redfall is a new sci-fi fantasy universe where players will take the supernatural fight to vampires in a small mid-western town. Oh, and it is an entirely online game, completely deviating from the single-player Arkane formula. Truthfully, this does make Redfall a big gamble for the studio, but with hits like Dishonored, Dishonored 2, Prey, and Deathloop under the company belt, we can't help but be excited.

Best Upcoming Games 2022: Breath of the Wild 2

Much like Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild 2 really would be on this best upcoming games list regardless of what it was lined up against. Ever since the gaming world collectively decided to make the Breath of the Wild the benchmark for open world games, fans have been clamouring for an eventual follow up. And it seems that after nearly 6 long years the sequel is finally on its way. While we don't know much about this title from what we have seen it looks ambitious and is set to really push the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch.
