Warzone Surpasses 80 Million Downloads And Overtakes Fortnite In Teen Popularity
The Call of Duty franchise delivers once again as revealed in the third-quarter earnings report that Activision Blizzard released yesterday. Not only did they outperform analyst expectations at $1.77 billion (~£1.364 billion) vs the expected $1.69 billion (~£1,302 billion) but it was also revealed that the Call of Duty franchise was once again a major contributor out of Activision Blizzard's portfolio to achieve those numbers.
According to CEO Bobby Kotick, Call of Duty: Warzone has been downloaded over 80 million times since its launch in March, continuing its rapid rise from 50 million in April. In an interview with GamesBeat, the Kotick stated that Warzone facilitated significant sales of the main game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. With that, Modern Warfare achieved its highest sales in franchise history. As Yahoo finance reports, in recent months Warzone appears even to have overtaken the popular Batte Royale Fortnite in teen popularity according to a survey. The future of the Call of Duty franchise and it's Battle Royale mode is looking bright. Activision's portfolio is reported to have brought in an average of 111 million active monthly users.
On the Blizzard Entertainment side of the business, Hearthstone was able to maintain its monthly active users year over year with World of Warcraft holding on to its player base with Shadowlands on the horizon. Moreover, it was shared that even four and a half years after launch Overwatch still had a monthly active player base of over 10 million players, attesting to the strong draw of the universe Blizzard Entertainment has created with its newest IP, awaiting a release date for its sequel Overwatch 2.
