The Easter eggs are back, and in greater number. While our seven-episode trip to the galaxy far away for Robert Rodriguez's The Book of Boba Fett was packed with Easter eggs, it turned out we missed one. What's more, it's one for gaming fans.
From clattering droids to the bucket of bolts that is the Millennium Falcon, the technology in Star Wars is a nod to the era when A New Hope debuted in 1977. There was a weird ice cream maker that popped up in The Empire Strikes Back and since retroactively added to canon as a portable safe to store your valuables in. Now, there's an even stranger piece of kit that's made the leap from real life.
What Is The Book Of Boba Fett's Gaming Easter Egg?
Although all the big Easter egg roundups missed this one, Digital Eclipse’s Mike Mika noticed that David Pasquesi’s majordomo is carrying a Coleco Bowlatronic. It's a deep cut to the history of handheld consoles, with the Coleco Bowlatronic being released in 1981. The Coleco Bowlatronic was an electronic tabletop game that let you try and capture the magic of bowling as a handheld system.
Someone else responded that one of the tools the Mandalorian used to fix his Naboo starfighter was a standard one you can get from a DIY shop. This practice isn't uncommon and is actually known as kitbashing. The Star Wars franchise is one of the most prolific at this method, with several spaceship styles being made using pre-existing model kits.
It's mad to think that 41 years after the Coleco Bowlatronic was first released, one has been remodelled for a throwaway moment in a Star Wars show - being held by an infuriating character that doesn't even have a name. Console purists are sure to be furious that one has been reused in this way, but they're not that hard to find online.
What's Going On With Star Wars Games?
Star Wars and gaming go hand in hand, with a whole Outer Rim of titles on the horizon. Alongside the Quantic Dream-led Star Wars Eclipse, there's Respawn's Fallen Order 2. There's also a flurry of rereleases of classic Star Wars games, meaning it's a partnership that's sure to continue.
Elsewhere, there are even theories Anakin Skywalker had a Nintendo N-Gage next to him in Revenge of the Sith. If you think an obscure bowling game from 1981 is a niche Easter egg, never forget that Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn's used a Gillette razor as a communicator in The Phantom Menace - seriously, check it out.
