We've got a killer Star Wars theory, with out-there fanatics convinced Starkiller is about to make his comeback. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed might not be the best-loved outing in the groaning back catalogue of Star Wars games, but we'd be lying if we said we aren't interested in a third entry.
Back before Respawn Entertainment was sitting pretty with Cal Kestis, LucasArts was giving us its own take on the cosmos. Introducing the complex Galen Marek, aka Starkiller - Darth Vader's apprentice who is sent to hunt down rogue Jedi. The Force Unleased II came out in 2010, but sadly, that's where the story ended.
The Force Unleashed drops a surprise update
For some reason, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed has just dropped an update. It comes a mere 15 years after the game first released, leaving players scratching their heads about what's going on. The 2008 title's Xbox version was just hit with a 448.56MB update.
It's a relatively small update, meaning it's not like we're getting a massive expansion to celebrate Disney's Ahsoka. The most frustrating part is that no one has figured out what the update has added, meaning there are rumblings in the Force that it's everything from a licensing issue to hints of The Force Unleashed 3.
While mulling over what's going on, one fan joked, "Unleashing more force probably," while another added, "New Ahsoka sex scene." Ultimately, it looks like it could be addressing a recurring frame rate issue on Xbox. Still, that didn't stop you from theorising it could be pointing to a threequel.
Someone cheered, "I need a 3rd instalment now. The games don't need to be canon Disney!" Unfortunately, we've been here before, and we don't see The Force Unleashed 3 happening.
What happened to Force Unleased 3?
At one time, there were plans for a third Force Unleashed game. Although Force Unleashed II was a bigger and bolder sequel, it received mixed reviews and has only since become a cult classic. LucasArts had been mapping out a third game, but Disney's acquisition of Star Wars in 2012 led to it getting its own Order 66.
In 2017, Twitch interview, Starkiller actor Sam Witwer and Project Lead Haden Blackman said the third game would've been more open-world, with Vader and Starkiller teaming up to take on a new threat from Palpatine. It sounds like a grand affair that would've included a two-player co-op.
Given the canon-shattering events of The Force Unleashed II, we can't imagine it fitting with Disney's newfound cohesion. Then again, with Starkiller's armour hiding in the background of the live-action Andor series, it suggests that Galen Marek is out there, somewhere, in official Star Wars canon.
