Star Wars Galaxies was a delight - while it lasted. The MMORPG has been out of action for some time, much to the dismay of the game's most dedicated fans. Sadly, Star Wars games in the genre don't typically last long enough to really stick around or earn constant support.

Since the game's servers shut down in 2011 - just before the launch of The Old Republic - fans have yearned to go back to the game's many worlds. Some game developer Star Wars fans have offered to oblige, and now, a return to Star Wars Galaxies seems like a more realistic prospect than ever.

For those of you yearning for the Star Wars MMO experience of yesteryear, don't worry - a big revival of Star Wars Galaxies servers is going strong and has been now for a good seven months.

Star Wars Galaxies Restoration 3 is coming into the new year with plans to revamp and improve the fan-run servers, and even to add its own original content at some point. The game has seen 12,207 characters created, which naturally pails in comparison to the official game's numbers, but this is a gigantic achievement for such a project.

The undertaking for the fan developer team is huge, and it's incredible that the game has been self-sustaining for so long. It's certainly the best way to coast out the wait until the new Star Wars game, as well as a way to quell your burning nostalgia.

Restoration III

The restored Star Wars MMO is set to reach ambitions unknown for the typical restoration, and implement some original content for the first time. Community progression goals are slated to join the game, along with a complete Jedi class and the opportunity to explore the lava planet Mustafar.

It's immensely impressive to see the team of devs tackle their own approach to the Star Wars universe, and great to see that restorations like this can truly succeed as a labour of love. Star Wars Galaxies Restoration 3 certainly fills the gap left in the original game's wake, and if you've been missing the MMORPG action that can succeed in the Star Wars universe, this restoration could tide you over until the next official release.
