Rainbow Six Siege 'Coming Soon To' Xbox Game Pass
Get ready to experience all the colours of the rainbow as the latest rumours suggest Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege could be about to land on the Xbox Game Pass. It's been five years since the tactical shooter first burst onto consoles, but alongside an upcoming release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, news that R6 could be getting a new lease of life on the Game Pass is great news for Xbox owners.
It was already confirmed R6 is being revamped for next-gen consoles - which will also include cross-gen capabilities - but the addition of the title of Game Pass is huge for those who still can't get enough of the beloved reboot of the long-running Rainbow franchise. Now, the Xbox Game Pass Twitter has left gamers scratching their heads with what is surely an imminent announcement.
Over on Twitter, the official Game Pass account shared a picture of a Medieval-looking trebuchet outside a castle. Above it is a series of rainbows (six to be precise), hinting that an announcement is on the way. Game Pass offers some of the biggest games around as part of a subscription service - recently showcasing the likes of DOOM Eternal and Forza Motorsport 7. Either way, R6 landing on it would be a coup.
Microsoft boss Phil Spencer unveiled the company's plans to also bring Game Pass to iOS at some point in 2021. Despite its status as a veteran of the gaming community, Rainbow Six Siege has kept itself relevant with constant updates and a revamped roster every season. In August, Ubisoft had another of those crossovers it's so good at crafting when Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher joined R6 as an operator.
Whatever is gong on, it's a move in the right direction. Game Director Leroy Athanassof has discussed the idea of Rainbow Six Siege going free-to-play, and while this isn't quite there, it's one step closer. Athanassof told PC Gamer at this year's Six Invitational, "It’s a company decision. I think on the development team we want that at some point. We want the game to be accessible to everyone".
He'd also said he felt R6 wasn't quite there yet as he added, "You need certain features ready to be a good and successful free-to-play game". Athanassof highlighted that "Smurfing" is a problem, where experienced players create a new account to take out players of lesser skill: "What’s important for us is that we find out as soon as possible that a player is highly skilled in the things that matter. The problem right now is that you can play a certain amount of matches with Copper players while you’re a Diamond".
We already know Rainbow Six Siege will be getting a free update to next-gen consoles. The new and improved R6 will run 120 frames per second with 4K resolution. While it looks increasingly likely that the game is coming to Xbox Game Pass, we'll have to wait just a little longer until we'll know for sure.
