As expected, Hideo Kojima appeared in January's PlayStation State of Play presentation. Even though fans of Death Stranding got everything they could have wanted and even more (including a fight with an electric guitar and a puppet who looks like Alan Wake), there was more to come.

We'd thought exclusivity would have ended with two titles - Death Stranding making its home on PlayStation, and OD finding a new one on Xbox. But there's more to come, and being one that no one could've predicted, fans cannot wait.

Hideo Kojima is working on a new action espionage game

Holy hell, it's happening. Kojima revealed that he's working on a new game with PlayStation, that not only serves as the culmination of his then-40 years working in video games, but also as the return to the genre that made him an icon - action espionage.

As this is the moniker that is most commonly associated in gaming with Metal Gear, it's raised a few eyebrows. The title appears to be named Physint and intends to blur the lines between video game and film by bringing players closer than ever to an interactive movie experience.

Still, gamers are far more focussed on the fact that Hideo Kojima is officially returning to the espionage world. After all, it's what made him popular, and we're riveted by the thought of a game like Metal Gear coming to the current generation of consoles.

The idea of bringing Kojima's ideas to life more than ever is something most would throw money at, but there are concerns about what this means for the franchise that has chosen to soldier on without Kojima. You'll notice that the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake was mysteriously absent from the state of play.

Now that Kojima is making an espionage game, fans are wondering what the future of Metal Gear can look like, because if it goes up against an actual Kojima action espionage title, what will players choose?

One critic said, "Konami’s been dead to me since Kojima and IGA left, lmao," while another added, "Looking at Konami and Kojima’s separate projects develop must be what it feels like having parents that are divorced."

A third said, "Kojima Productions announced a new Action Espionage game for PS5. I wouldn't want Konami making a new Metal Gear, so this is fantastic," and a fourth concluded, "Konami : Hey look we are going back to MGS ! Kojima : oh is that so ? aight bet It's gotta be the biggest "F**k you" I've seen so far."

Only time will tell, but one thin's for certain - fans can't wait to see what Kojima is cooking up. We expect it'll be a bonkers evolution of his work on Metal Gear, but then again, that's just what we want from him.
