Nintendo has become known for its reluctance to let fans legally play its legacy titles. The Nintendo Switch’s online service has been offering some classic emulation, but not nearly enough for fans’ liking - keeping the likes of Super Mario 64 either buried in a collection that is out of production, or like contraband for gamers to emulate and feel guilty about later.

For a company with more legacy titles than most that have shaped the world of gaming, Nintendo isn’t half bad for keeping them out of reach of fans. In the wake of this, players have had to get creative, and now,  found a way to play the games they want to on the Xbox before they’ve found out how to on modern Nintendo hardware.

Incredibly, the Xbox has become the new home of 3D classic Super Mario 64, as some players have found a way to emulate it on the console. The first peek at how it works was shared by Twitter user DanielAJHollis, who has showcased a video of them dashing around Bob-Omb Battlefield.

It’s funny that the Xbox - a console so different to Nintendo’s Switch on so many levels - is likely to see more players on Super Mario 64 than Nintendo’s current breadwinner. Chances are, it’ll see so many players because playing the game on Xbox is surprisingly easy.

All you have to do to play Super Mario 64 on your box is open the Super Mario 64: Browser Edition website in the Xbox’s browser, and when you reach the start screen, press the ‘menu’ button. You’ll be prompted to switch to browser controls, and you should ignore this.

Press ‘B’ to close the prompt, then hit ‘menu’ again as quickly as possible. Once you’ve done this, the game should be aligned and you’ll be able to play the classic straight away.

Following swiftly in the footsteps of Xbox owners finding a way to emulate the PS1 to next-gen before Sony did, Super Mario 64 is an arguably even better gift. Let this emulation be a lesson to Nintendo - let us give you our money to play your old games!
