This isn't the "last" you'll hear on The Last of Us, as Naughty Dog confirms it has some major news on the way for the apocalyptic shuffler. Following the success of the original The Last of Us in 2013, the series continued with 2020's divisive Part II and left a cloud of uncertainty of the franchise future.

Much like AMC's The Walking Dead, part of what made The Last of Us unique is the fact the infected zombies that populate this world aren't even the biggest threat. Instead, the world of The Last of Us was full of dangerous human enemies - including the protagonists themselves.

What's Naughty Dog said about The Last of Us?

If you thought Naughty Dog had gone a bit quiet on The Last of Us, you'd be forgiven. Whether it's the divisive reception of last year's game, the COVID-19 pandemic upturning the development process, or a mix of both, things have been left on a cliffhanger following THAT macabre ending.

Previously known as "Outbreak Day", Naughty Dog renamed the annual celebration "The Last of Us Day" in the midst of the global pandemic. A bit like celebrating Alien Day on April 26, The Last of Us Day promises to deliver the goods on all things related to TLoU. So, if there's going to be an announcement, you know it's going to be then.

In a new PlayStation Blog post, Naughty Dog confirmed this year's The Last of Us Day will be one to watch.  Joshua Bradley, the Designer of Communications at Naughty Dog, said "We will be revealing some all-new content on September 26 at 9:00am PT/ 6:00pm CET". As well as this, the post listed a tonne of TLoU-inspired products like a WLF bomber jacket and a replica of Ellie's guitar from Part II

The mention of "all-new content" is what's grabbed everyone attention. Last year's day came in the immediate aftermath of Part II's release, so there wasn't exactly a lot to talk about.

What's coming to The Last of Us?

Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann has remained close to the series, and as well as defending the decisions made in Part II, has continued to tease more from this wicked world of cordyceps-infected monsters and the equally monstrous human that have survived their plague.

We already know there's a story in place for where things could go in a mythical Part III, but as we don't see Druckmann announcing that anytime soon, it's over to guessing what's on the way next. Notably, most think it will be the long-awaited reveal of the Factions multiplayer.

Elsewhere, the recent announcement of the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will bring Nathan Drake to PC for the first time. Could Ellie and Joel follow in the treasure hunter's footsteps and make the leap to PC? Also, players are still bummed that Part II didn't get a DLC in the vein of the OG's Left Behind. It's about time we got a Lev spin-off.

Finally, we know the live-action The Last of Us series is coming to HBO Max. Starring Game of Thrones alumni Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, filming has been flying along, so September 26 would be a great time to give us a first peek. To be honest, we think it will be the Factions standalone that steals the limelight at The Last of Us Day. As long as it isn't a Temple Run-inspired mobile game, we'll be happy.
