While the "Golden Gun" was once a power-up or modifier in classic first-person shooters that offered instant death for anyone unfortunate enough to be hit by it, 24-karat weapons are now seen as a badge of honour among shooter communities - particularly in Call of Duty.

Often doled out as a reward for completing challenges in multiplayer, sharp-eyed players have started to spot the shiny weapons in Modern Warfare 3's campaign, which launched in early access yesterday.

Golden AK spotted in Modern Warfare 3's campaign

Popular CoD account ModernWarzone tweeted the image below, showing a golden AK, with matching scope and attachments, within the campaign.

Multiple comments suggest that there are akimbo golden Desert Eagles to be found in the same mission, too, although others are less impressed given many players were not able to jump in immediately due to issues with CoD HQ.

What does it mean? Not a lot, in truth - but I like to think the enemies in Modern Warfare 3's story mode have been knuckling down to complete their own weapon challenges, and the gold guns being pried out of their hands by players were their hard-earned rewards.

Will progression carry over to Modern Warfare 3?

Thanks to Activision's "Carry Forward" process, your unlocked weapons, camo, and store bundles will move from Modern Warfare 2 into Modern Warfare 3 when the full game launches on November 10, 2023. That means your accrued golden guns should be going with you.

"The term “Carry Forward” simply refers to content currently available to players in Modern Warfare II and the current version of Call of Duty: Warzone (such as weapons and cosmetic content, including Bundles, Operators, and other rewards and unlocks from the game), and how much of it will be accessible in Modern Warfare III," Activision's FAQ site explains.

Given just how many weapons that means there will be in Modern Warfare 3, expect things to be pretty hectic when multiplayer arrives as the devs work to balance everything as best they can.
