Snipers are an iconic weapon category in the Call of Duty series, providing some of the most famous clips in the franchise's history.
From the Intervention to the M40A3, there's nothing like landing the perfect long-range shot or quick scope on an opponent.
Unfortunately, snipers didn't have the best reputation in MW3 Ranked, as it often felt like there was zero counterplay. While the pros had snipers restricted for a while, they remained in Ranked for a long time.
That's changed in Season 2, as the devs have now banned all snipers in Ranked Play and it's divided the community.
All snipers have been restricted in MW3 Ranked Play
The weapon pool in Ranked is a divisive topic in the Call of Duty community, with some fans arguing the limited options make it boring and others claiming it's meant to be this way so victory can be decided by skill.
For arguably too long, a lot of Ranked players have been confused as to why the pros get to ban snipers, but they remained an option to use in the competitive mode.
That's now changed, with the February 13 patch notes announcing that all snipers are now restricted in Ranked.
MW3 fans are divided about the Ranked Sniper ban
It's safe to say the reaction to this news has been mixed from the community, with one side claiming that now means "the most boring mode is even more boring." They argue that the devs should focus on actually balancing the weapons so there is a broader pool, rather than just banning whatever is deemed OP.
In their opinion, this would result in more variety and a better viewing experience in the CDL. Not everyone shares this opinion, with a lot of hardcore CoD Ranked fans praising the decision and putting forward that this is a "Major W" as "sniping doesn’t belong in RP."
"Anyone high diamond+ rank is ecstatic about this change since it actually mimics the CDL," said one user, with another arguing, "Why are people up in arms about this? The pros don't use snipers and this mode was meant to mimic that as close as possible."
While there are players on both sides of the debate, this change does make Ranked more like the CDL - which is ultimately the goal for the highly competitive mode.
