Modern Warfare 3 has bad news for MW2 (2009) map fans

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has relied on the past since it launched, but now, Sledgehammer has confirmed it won't be relying on old MW2 (2009) maps.

Much of the excitement that came for Modern Warfare 3 was the fact that it was serving as something as a throwback to some classic maps from the Modern Warfare series. Unfortunately, some think that Sledgehammer Games hasn't quite struck the balance between pioneering and nostalgia.

While there are some who are still embroiled in it, others who are starting to look beyond it and ask what else makes Modern Warfare 3 different from its predecessor. They're not coming up with much.

In the meantime, it's best for us to feel as though we're getting our money's worth with the throwback maps, with Sledgehammer taking us back to the glory days of Modern Warfare 2 (2009). But it seems that the well might be running dry sooner than we expected.

Modern Warfare won't adapt MW2 (2009) DLC maps

Though classic maps have led the way for fans, it looks like they could end soon, as the developers of Modern Warfare 3 have claimed that chances of DLC maps from Modern Warfare 2 coming to the game are slim.

During a recent Reddit AMA, fans were asking about the expansion maps and their potential inclusion in the game, and the official Sledgehammer Games account had some sore news.

"There are no plans for these specific maps to return at this time," it says "Our Seasonal updates will largely be made of all-new maps!" This means that the likes of Bailout, Overgrown and Carnival have been snubbed.

It's disappointing for some, but it could be seen as a good thing that Modern Warfare 3 seems to be chasing new content, especially as many feel that the game has built too much of its identity on recognisability. Though, that does force us to ask a bigger question.

Will fans accept new content from Modern Warfare 3?

Though there have been some changes to the gameplay of Modern Warfare 3 that help to make multiplayer a more sleek experience, the game has largely relied on the work of Call of Duty's past. It means the things that have appeared as new (namely its critically panned campaign) haven't stuck so well.

There is a chance that any attempts to innovate could be met with indifference from fans, not because they're stuck in the past, but because they're simply used to it. Thankfully, we've got a pretty healthy Season 1 update that hopes to turn MW3's shaky start around.

Only time will tell how these changes will go, but there's potential for a big drop off here. A year is a long time, and though we expect that MW3 will make it through, the series' history might not shine on it in the same way.
