The future of Smash Bros. has, for the first time, felt quiet. Now that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has officially concluded its updates and DLC characters, there are some players who are looking toward the future, but there are others who know it isn't all that simple.

Masahiro Sakurai is overdue his well-earned retirement, and though he works through that semi-retirement for now, players know it can't last. Fans of the brutal brawler don't know what a Smash game could look like without him, and it looks like Nintendo doesn't either. Regardless, the team could be ploughing forward.

Smash Bros 6 gets renewed hype with new job listings

A team that worked on Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition and Mario Kart Tour has revealed a brand-new studio that is dedicated solely to working on Nintendo titles. Some have pointed out some interesting details about their website.

As reported by Source Gaming, Bandai Namco Studios has revealed Studio 2/Studio S, which is planned a studio dedicated to assisting Nintendo with the development of its games. Already, it's kicking into gear with hirings.

Most compelling about this reveal, is that players (and Source Gaming) have noticed that the team is looking for new staff members experienced in action games. This has hinted to some that Smash's return could be on the cards or in development, although it can't be confirmed just yet.

Smash could continue without Sakurai

Right now, it's hard to imagine Smash without the input of Sakurai, especially as he is a driving force behind bringing the many franchises tucked inside it into a unifying art style and narrative. Sakurai's creative hand is what elevates the game from a dull fighter that smushes characters together into Smash.

We've heard about a potential Ultimate sequel before, but more than just a grey future without Sakurai, he'd warned that he couldn't see where the franchise could go after the expanded roster and success of the last game.

Still, Smash is one of Nintendo's big IPs, and we don't see the gaming giant letting it fall to the wayside. Whatever comes next will likely follow Smash's many other successes, so maybe we'll have to be ready to see the series without Sakurai. Sob.
