Jinnytty Faces Backlash Following 'Ableist' Comment About Child Cosplayer
The LA Comic Con allows cosplayers from across the globe to show off their incredible creations in a supportive space surrounded by fellow enthusiasts. Twitch streamer Jinnytty attended the event and was admiring the intricate costumes, when a joke she made towards one in particular left viewers furious.
Jinnytty's Twitch content has helped her to gain 672K followers on the platform, in which she documents her travels around the globe and her experiences playing Demon's Souls. The Korean streamer and self-described "gaming girl" then documented her experiences attending the LA Comic Con.
It was while streaming her time during Day 2 at Comic Con that she came across a young cosplayer in a wheelchair dressed as Spider-Man alongside their carer dressed as Dr. Strange. This is when things went awry and Jinnytty was met with a wave of criticism from viewers.
What Did Jinnytty Say To The Spider-Man Cosplayer?
Jinnytty was streaming her second day at the Los Angeles Comic Con and joined in with the festivities by coming dressed as Wonder Woman. The Korean streamer had already come across coplayers dressed as Zelda and Waluigi. It was then that she came across a young cosplayer in a wheelchair dressed as Spider-Man and their carer who was dressed as Dr Strange. Blown-away by the amazing costumes, Jinnytty said: "Wow this is really cool." After catching the attention of the duo, it was Jinnytty's next comment which enraged fans when she said: "Like a Stephen Hawking Spider-Man? Yeah, like a Stephen Hawking Spider-Man!"
The chat was overwhelmed with angry stream viewers who accused Jinnytty of being 'ableist' and making an offensive comment about the young Spider-Man fan within earshot of the cosplaying duo. Over on Reddit, the reaction was just as negative as one Reddit user said: "That's f*cked, imagine how the dad felt." Some of Jinnytty's fans supported her by saying that the comment was not intentionally offensive, but another responded: "I was expecting her to be in admiration of their costume and have a wholesome moment making the day of some disabled (I assume a) child. Nope, went really weird with it, what the actual f*ck."
The clip has since been deleted and is nowhere to be seen on the VOD on Jinnytty's Twitch channel, but Dexerto managed to find the original clip. It goes without saying that Jinnytty isn't the only streamer to come under fire from fans for offensive comments. For example, the Botez sisters found themselves in hot water following their comments at the Chess World Championships in Dubai and fans are very eager to keep controversial figure Jake Paul away from Twitch. One Apex Legends dev was actually fired when his 'racist and sexist' comments from the past resurfaced.
Did Jinnytty Apologise For The Comments?
Following on from the backlash in the Twitch streaming chat, Jinnytty immediately apologised for her comments: "Is that an actual person? That was an actual person? That’s my bad, I thought someone made it. I didn’t know. My bad. I actually didn’t know." However, for many Reddit users, this wasn't acceptable, as one said: "I can understand some of her fans saying it's a cultural thing. But people are unironically posting she thought it was a prop. Not only believing that but using it as a defense. Jesus Christ".
Jinnytty has yet to make an official apology or to address her comments on her social media.
