Warning: spoilers for Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #4 ahead

There's tragedy on the Fortnite island, as Epic Games' battle royale brawler is in mourning. One of the game's most iconic faces has just been killed off in shocking style during the DC Comics crossover with Batman. The Caped Crusader has swooped down onto the map and found himself trapped in a twisted loop alongside some familiar faces. Away from the usual family-friendly vibe of the actual game, the comics have taken a dark turn. This is your last chance to turn back.

We're currently on Issue #4 out of a planned six, meaning Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point is heading into the final furlong. While the first few issues have seen Batman do battle with old foes like Deathstroke and Catwoman, the latest issue saw him seek the help of Fortnite favourites like Renegade Raider, Eternal Voyager, Bandolette, and Fishstick. Like any good comic arc, there were sure to be deaths, however, was anyone expecting the crossover to kill off Fishstick? Looks like it's fish fingers for dinner tonight.

How did Fortnite kill off [SPOILER] ?

Issue #4 wasted no time jumping into the action as Batman finally got to confront Deathstroke. It's come conveniently timed with the sharp-shooting mercenary's arrival in the shop alongside his very own glider. After Deathstroke kidnapped Catwoman, he locked horns with Batman and the two exchanged some revelations about the Fortnite loop. Batman later took control of the group of Fortnite characters who'd escaped their own loop, with the rag-tag team breaking into one of the previously impenetrable hatches and into the heart of the island/Fortnite lore.

When the group came across a staging area full of vaulted weapons, they were attacked by a gang of rock monsters (we smell a skin on the way), but not everyone was as quick as Batman. Yes, we know Fortnite is largely a game about killing your opponents, but with everything resetting after each match, we'd never really thought about the consequences of killing characters off. In the comics, there was a disturbing scene when the Dark Knight came across the crushed remains of Fishstick.

With his dying breath, Fishstick gave Batman a mysterious device and warned him there's a traitor in the ranks. Readers were hit with a "...to be continued" before the mole was exposed - which is sure to sell a few copies of Issue #5.  Safe to say, no one was expecting this heartbreak.

What does Fishstick's death mean for Fortnite?

Everything lines up with Chapter 2 Season 7 waiting in the wings, as the Batman crossover heads toward its own endgame. Since his introduction in Chapter 1 Season 7, Fishstick has become a firm favourite of Fortnite fandom. As well as setting up shop with his own restaurant in Craggy Cliffs, he's had a number of variant skins giving him a pirate and VR makeover. Only recently, Epic Games introduced a potential love interest in the form of Princess Felicity Fish

It remains to be seen whether Fishstick's Game of Thrones-inspired death sticks, or whether we're in for a typically comic book resurrection. One thing's for sure though, the comics are definitely part of official Fortnite lore. As well as Batman's shack making the leap from the comics, we've seen DC favourites like Catwoman and Deathstroke also appear in-game. If this is the case, it suggests Fishstick's death could be addressed in the ongoing Season 6/Season 7 storyline.

Although the Fortnite loop has brought characters back from the dead, the fact Batman and co. are currently out of the loop suggests Fishstick's death could be permanent. Let's also remember that noted Fortnite leaker ShiinaBR recently shared concept art of Zombie Fishstick. Then again, the first panel of the next issue could pull that good ol' "he was just unconscious" schtick. Either way, we'll definitely be picking up the next issue to see whether Fishstick is left bobbing upside down on the surface of the water.
