The history of Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 is changing in real time, and we have no choice but to watch it happen. Fans couldn't have predicted that the writers would be so bold as to make some big changes to one of the world's most beloved games in its remake, but...they're doing it.

Avalanche has been upgraded from a scrappy bunch of mercs to a full organisation, the whispers are rescuing Cloud and Aerith from death, and Shinra take matters into their own hands and destroy their own reactor in hopes of sparking a war.

It's carnage, but in many ways, it's welcome because it means that fans of the original game get to have an all-new experience, perhaps even justifying the move to drag the events of the title out into multiple games. But there's one particular moment that fans are nervous about. And Square Enix knows just how to push our buttons.

SPOILER WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the original Final Fantasy 7. Abandon all hype ye who enter here.

Final Fantasy 7 fans are scared for Tifa

Final Fantasy 7 using fate and destiny like Play-Doh has had some ramifications on fan expectations, and they're thinking that some major story elements could be about to shift in the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Making the most of this, Square Enix is toying with their emotions.

In the original game, one of the most iconic and heartbreaking moments is Sephiroth falling from the sky and skewering Aerith like a sad kebab. It leads to what many would call the saddest death in gaming history.

As players have pointed out, there's a good chance that Square Enix could be aiming for the ultimate rug-pull, letting somebody else take Aerith's place as the sacrificial lamb. And fans think it could be Tifa.

Tifa has had a much more prominent role in the game's remake than its original appearance (especially as there's more playtime to pad out), so fans have naturally assumed that she could be on the chopping block.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth teaser sees Tifa in danger

Square Enix has revealed a new teaser for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and it sees Tifa falling backwards towards a vat of green liquid while Cloud calls out her name. Could this be it? One concerned player said, "I'm feeling so many emotions. From aerith to tifa. 😭 i bet this game's gonna be a rollercoaster of emotion."

Another added, "The way Cloud yelled Tifa's name is crazy! I need it to be Feb 29th!" and a third said, "I love that they aren’t spoiling a ton. Leaves us with a lot to discover 👏." Major changes are likely on the way, but would Square Enix really change one of gaming's most iconic moments?

We can't know yet, as the incredibly cinematic trailer has left things ambiguous for good reason - but this is doing nothing to help ease worries that changing Final Fantasy's history via remakes is going to spare Tifa. Maybe both Tifa and Aerith are going to get the chop. The tension is palpable, and we're not sure we can take it.
