Detective Pikachu, Sonic the HedgehogUnchartedResident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City - you get the idea. While video game adaptations were once confined to being abysmal reimaginings of the source material like DOOM or The House of the Dead, we're (hopefully) in a new era of box office bonanzas, so what's next?

Proving that nothing is sacred, the latest reports claim Epic Games could be founding its own movie division. More than just starting the ball rolling with a Fortnite movie, the gaming giant might be planning a whole FCU (Fortnite Cinematic Universe). Urgh, you've been warned.

What's the Fortnite movie rumour?

Hot off the presses, The Information claims the next Fortnite expansion will be into the medium of movies. It comes after Epic hired a number of former bigwigs from Lucasfilm. The impressive roster of talent includes Jason McGatlin as President of "special projects" at Epic. His CV is something to behold, with McGatlin having worked on Disney's Star Wars movies.

Apparently, Epic is exploring new ways to grow - thanks in part to the Apple lawsuit restricting its stronghold on the mobile market. It's true, Fortnite does (sort of) have a story. We're now on Chapter 2 Season 8, so there's plenty of lore to pull from. Added to this, we recently saw the potential of a Fortnite finding a new medium thanks to the success of Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point

Is Epic really working on a Fortnite movie?

When asked about the rumours of the FCU, Epic declined to comment. Well, that's a little suspicious. Only recently, we covered how Universal Studios erected a giant Battle Bus. We speculated this could be tied into the game or a possible tease of a Fortnite-themed attraction, but what if it's a movie collab with Universal?

Even though movies like Ready Player One and The Lego Movie have leaned heavily into the idea of a metaverse with great results, a Fortnite movie (either live-action or CGI) might be a step too far. There are ways it could work, and to be honest, we'd probably be invested in seeing how Peely the banana came to life.

The big question is, do we need one? Even the most diehard Fortnite fans are sure to be split by this one. We can already see a cast of Chris Pratt and Megan Fox driving this one into the round before it's even out. Either way, Epic is sure to coin it with a Fortnite movie. God help us all.
