It's hard to deny Star Wars games are in a pretty good spot right now, and as the franchise gears up for a lot of changes from the series and films being revealed at 2023's Star Wars Celebration, there's no better time to get involved with galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars has been turning out some bangers of games ever since the first movies launched, from Super Star Wars to Jedi: Survivor (which is peeking around the corner at us), with a Knights of the Old Republic remake still threatening to arrive.
Then again, the classics are worth doubling back on if you haven't taken them for a spin - especially during the era when the series wasn't afraid of carving out its own lore. And now, you have a chance to play a fan-favourite entirely for free.
Republic Commando is going free on Nintendo Switch
A free-to-play week is about to go live for Star Wars: Republic Commando, a game that was forgotten all too soon, for players on Nintendo Switch.
The game has become a real cult classic among Star Wars connoisseurs, allowing players to command an elite squad of Clones during the Clone Wars. The game debuted in 2005 but got a HD port for PS4 and Switch back in 2021. This lead to many players finding the game for the very first time.
"Boss, Fixer, Scorch, and Sev, better known as Delta Squad, are back on Nintendo Switch!" reads the game's description on the Nintendo eShop. "Relive the legendary campaign. [...] Chaos has erupted throughout the galaxy.
"As leader of an elite squad of Republic Commandos, your mission is to infiltrate, dominate, and ultimately annihilate the enemy." Feeling like a setup for the animated The Bad Batch series, Republic Commando is a game we highly encourage you try out...especially for free.
When can I play Republic Commando for free?
If you want to take Star Wars: Republic Commando for a spin yourselves, you'll be able to download the game for free between April 20 and April 26. As the campaign is only around 10 hours long, you can devour it entirely in that time if you get your head down.
It's a nice touch for Nintendo to offer the game for free, especially as it's a really deep cut into the world of Star Wars video games. Treat yourself - after all, you're not paying for it.
