It's déjà vu for Modern Warfare 3 players, as Sledgehammer Games has once again disabled a broken shotgun attachment for the second time in a month. The Call of Duty series is going through a rough patch at the moment, and following a botched Season 1 Reloaded update, things aren't getting much better.
Here we go again
Balancing multiplayer games must be no easy feat, especially when your game is filled with weapons from a previous instalment and there's a whole other Battle Royale variation to consider too. The teams at Activision are usually pretty on the ball with balancing, but sometimes, things unavoidably slip through the cracks.
This time, it's the Maelstrom Dual Trigger attachment for the Lockwood 300 shotgun that's been taken out of the game. It's due to a bug that caused it to be completely overpowered. According to players, the attachment was causing fired rounds to plough straight through armour.
The Lockwood 300 was dealing immense damage, and in some cases, killing enemies in a single shot. As you can imagine, this is an immensely frustrating scenario for players, and it's not the first time this has happened. The same attachment was disabled from Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone in December 2023.
Now, MW3 has done the same thing, issuing a small playlist update to remove the benefit of the Maelstrom Dual Trigger attachment in the game. Players can still equip the attachment to their weapons, so it won't mess up your loadouts if you use the device in question.
However, it will behave the same as the normal version of the attachment, so you won't be seeing those one-shot kills as you may have seen previously. There's no word on when the pesky attachment will have its benefits bestowed upon it once more.
Bug or feature?
The last time the Lockwood 300 was disabled, it was only for a few days. Players will likely be able to use the attachment again very soon - hopefully with the frustrating bug fixed.
Fans have voiced their concern about the broken attachment on Reddit, with one saying, “Why the hell was it brought back into the game again in the first place? It was broken as shit before. What made them think it would be any different this time?"
Another added, "I have a question, genuinely. Why is it in the game? No one likes being one shot by anything, let alone a shotgun that downs you before your plates are registered as cracked on your screen."
Given that the attachment has been removed from the game twice, it seems clear that the massive damage it's capable of dealing is unintentional. That said, if we see the same thing happen for a third time, you know what they say about twice being a co-incidence, thrice being a trend…
