We're waiting with bated "breath", as the much-anticipated multiplayer mod for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is on the way. While we're devastated that Breath of the Wild 2 won't expand the Zelda family in 2022, at least we've got a reason to go back and play the OG all over again.

First released in 2017, Breath of the Wild continued the acclaimed legacy of Zelda games and delivered the biggest version of Hyrule we've ever seen. Although the likes of Four Swords Adventures and Phantom Hourglass are multiplayer entries, most traditional Zelda games make you go it alone as Link. Well, not for long.

What Is Breath Of The Wild Multiplayer?

Speedrunning extraordinaire PointCrow posted on Twitter and confirmed that he'll be playing the multiplayer Breath of the Wild mod in the summer. In November, PointCrow had offered $10,000 to whoever could make a working multiplayer expansion for Breath of the Wild, and that bounty clearly did the trick as two mod developers stepped up to make his dreams (and many others) a reality.

With Breath of the Wild being so massive, there was definitely room for multiplayer, however, Nintendo decided not to deliver the goods. There was some DLC content in the form of The Master Trials and The Champions' Ballad, but that's where the story ended. Thankfully, smart folk took PointCrow's challenge with gusto and have made a working multiplayer BotW mod.

In PointCrow's video, you can see the multiplayer mod working perfectly. Speaking to Dexerto, PointCrow explained: "It's functional, runs at 28fps at least, and you can be anywhere in the game. The mod needs polishing on more niche things like Cryonis, rune support, quest syncing, etc."

For now, PointCrow has a monopoly on multiplayer and plans to make the most of it. Explaining when it will be unleashed onto the masses, he added: "It’s coming to my YouTube channel in 2022. Then it will be made available for free for anyone to play once I've sufficiently made enough content surrounding it."

In a series of tweets PointCrow also revealed that the two primary modders have received the bounty and are also being paid "hourly" as they continue to build out the mod's functionality. So, while we might all want to get a shot of Breath of the Wind multiplayer as soon as possible, maybe it's fair that PointCrow gets to gatekeep this for a while.

At the time of writing, there's no news on whether Breath of the Wild 2 will be multiplayer, but following in the footsteps of the likes of Ocarina and the first Breath, we doubt you'll be tackling this fantasy epic with your pals in tow. Then again, a potential title leak for Breath of Duality has us hoping you'll be able to play as Link and Zelda, so who knows if you'll be able to double-team Ganon?
