What We Could See In The Black Ops Cold War Campaign

Treyarch is set to take us down another branch of warfare, as we open our history books and learn all about the Cold War. With President Ronald Reagan being a prominent feature of the Black Ops Cold War trailer, it looks like the period of the Cold War which we will learn all about will be set during his reign between January 1981 and 1989. With the Cold War being one of the more sophisticated and complex conflicts, here's what can we expect to see in the Black Ops Cold War Campaign.

Doctrine Richtofen

First off, we're undoubtedly set to have some backstory, although Activision has tried their best to take us through multiple historical non-conflict landmarks in the Easter eggs leading up to the trailer, such as the 'Bish you were here' chess match, aspects of the arms race, and much more.

The Cold War was a 'geopolitical tension' between the Soviet Union and the United States, in which both parties never directly fought. They often funded opposing sides of 'proxy wars' (small wars between a few countries, or civil wars), such as the Vietnam War. But it all stemmed from the Truman Doctrine of 1947. In a bill which was to prevent the spread of the Soviet Influence throughout the world (vaguely put), it led to tension between both parties, resulting in psychological warfare coming in to play, such as propaganda campaigns. The target was to show who had the biggest muscles, the United States or the Soviet Union.

Black Ops Cold War has already shown glimpses of the Arms Race in the trailers and Easter eggs, which hints at the campaign, or even Warzone, will teach us the back-story of events which led to Frank Woods and David Mason joining President Reagan in the Pentagon.

One of the biggest tensions was through nuclear warfare. Both parties were keen to flex their biceps at being the first to have a nuclear bomb and other nuclear weapons. By the time of Reagan's inauguration, the tensions were greater than ever, as Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev had tried and tested many missiles. Come 1983 the American organisation NATO successfully conducted a realistic military simulation exercise in which the NATO forces simulated a full-scale nuclear assault invoking an unexpected response from the Soviet Union.

The Black Ops Cold War campaign will likely focus on nuclear warfare, and you can bet your bottom dollar that the multiplayer elements will have the just rewards for dropping a 25-kill streak. With Reagan being the president in charge at the time of meeting Woods, Mason, and the Hollywood-esque Private Investigator figure, one can only assume many of his woes stem from stopping nuclear blasts that could destroy the world as they knew it.

The Wars Within Wars

No Call of Duty is complete without eccentric character plots and huge explosions, and despite the lack of actual conflict coming from the United States, images of the campaign show Woods with his boots on the ground and fire rising around him. The covert operation specialist doesn't tend to do things quietly. We already know that there is a heavy focus on Vietnam, meaning that we may catch them ripping through the Vietcong army, although the Vietnam War officially ended in 1975. Whilst the timeline might not quite match up, Call of Duty has always been one to bend the truth to suit the action.

Black Ops 1 saw Woods and co. head to the Bay of Pigs in Cuba, but they could also be heading to Malaysia this year, as the only other proxy war under Reagan's reign was the Second Malay Insurgency, where the friction between the Malaysian Communist Party (backed by the Soviet Union) and Government (backed by the United States) continued until 1987. With the resurgence growing weaker, the Government fended off the Communism party, which would make a perfect war for the Black Ops Cold War Campaign to focus on, with Activision often portraying American victories.
