Free-to-play games have to keep themselves going somehow, and though we know it has to be done, players still have a habit of being frustrated about it.

Some of the biggest games in the world allow you in free of charge, but then make their money on extra cosmetics in the game's online store. It's true of Fortnite, it's true of Warzone, and it's especially true of Apex Legends.

Apex fans have always been willing to deal with its cosmetic additions to a certain point, but many have drawn the line with recolours. It's a practice that sees Respawn simply take an exciting skin design, and… change its colours.

It's a controversial method of monetisation, but it seems to be working for Respawn. Yet, the devs have made sure to address it.

It looks like Respawn knows its strategy for milking two skins out of one design hasn't passed the team by, and as a part of its updates regarding the new season of Apex Legends, they've addressed the controversial cosmetic tactic - as well as one of their most recent controversies.

Speaking about the complaints from fans regarding Season 15's controversial collection completion reward of a Peacekeeper skin, Game Director Steven Ferreira acknowledged the issue.

In an interview with Dexerto, Ferreira said, "We thought players would really like the opportunity to get it. But we learned some lessons. You won’t see that collection event reward again, I can pretty much guarantee that."

As for accusations of milking skins for every penny, he concluded, "The intent is always to do something players enjoy and see value in, definitely not trying to upset anyone."

Respawn Hears Skin Criticism 'Loud And Clear'

On recoloured skins specifically, Ferreira claims that Respawn Entertainment has "100% seen the feedback," concluding, "We've heard loud and clear."

Whether or not this means change is coming or not is entirely unknown, but it's some comfort to know that the team aren't unaware of the tactic that has frustrated so many. Still, Ferreira isn't exactly saying Apex will completely do away with recolours.

We know you have to get your money back somehow, but come on, at least give us something with a little imagination. Imagine if Fortnite simply trotted out every skin with a slight tweak. The war for cosmetic justice rages on.
