You'll be wondering, are there dungeons in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has released to the public, giving fans of the legendary franchise a new entry after six years.

While Breath of the Wild made a huge departure from the original concept of Zelda, swapping a somewhat linear format for non-linear open world design, the next game has seen the return of some iconic features, such as the Tears of the Kingdom dungeons. While these still differ from past games, they are here for people to explore. So, check out our explainer of dungeons in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

If you want to know if dungeons are returning in Tears of the Kingdom, let’s dive in and find out.

There are dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom, but they differ from entries in the past. In this game, they are called Temples, and are major story sections you'll come to after making progress during story missions.

Despite the existence of Tears of the Kingdom dungeons, they differ from the classic design as they don't offer key items for the story, or introduce shortcuts to make traversal around the world quicker.

Part of this is because the dungeons don't need key items in this entry, and the open-world design means Metroidvania-like shortcuts aren't necessary.

The Tears of the Kingdom dungeons mostly consist of puzzles that require you to interact with the environment by using your new rune abilities. They play similarly to, and serve the same function as, Divine Beasts in Breath of the Wild, so if you're expecting anything much different, you may be disappointed.

That's all for our answer to the question, are there dungeons in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Now you know there are Tears of the Kingdom dungeons, but they are called temples and differ from older games in the franchise.

We also explain if there is a Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom expansion pass or DLC players can get.
