The Pokemon GO Tour 2024: It’s About Time (and Space) Special Research story asks you to 'choose a path' between Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup - but which one is best?

Pokemon GO Tour: Sinnoh has finally arrived, giving Trainers around the world a chance to catch their favourite Sinnoh-region creatures. There's also a Special Research story that lets you encounter Shadow versions of the starter trio in the game!

Should you choose Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup?

My advice would be to choose the Turtwig path, for the plain and simple reason that Shadow Torterra (its final evolution) is a top-tier Grass-type attacker. This will be an excellent option for taking down Ground, Rock, and Water-type Raid Bosses.

It's worth pointing out that Shadow Infernape and Shadow Empoleon (Chimchar and Piplup's final evolutions) are also good attackers for their respective types, so whichever choice you make, you'll be getting a decent addition to your Raid Battle team!

Unfortunately, none of these Sinnoh starters have any usability in the Pokemon GO Battle League, so don't worry about taking that into consideration. I'd recommend focusing on the type of Raid attackers you need instead.

On the other hand, if you're mainly interested in catching Shinies, you could base your decision on the Shiny starter you want most. Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup will have boosted Shiny odds during GO Tour: Sinnoh, so this gives you an extra chance to find one!

Differences between all three paths explained

The main difference between the three paths in the Pokemon GO Tour 2024: It’s About Time (and Space) Special Research story is the Shadow starter that you'll encounter as a reward for the first step of tasks.

If you choose Turtwig, you'll get a Shadow Turtwig encounter as well as some Turtwig Candy and XL Candy. If you choose Chimchar or Piplup, the rewards will instead be focused on that specific starter Pokemon.

One final bonus is that the Pokemon you choose will have a higher chance of being attracted to Incense. This is a great chance to catch a Shiny version, as all three starters have boosted Shiny odds during this event.

Other than that, your choice won't have any effect on the event. In fact, whether you choose Diamond or Pearl will have a bigger impact, as that will dictate which Legendary with Adventure Effects you can catch!

Ultimately, your decision should come down to which starter you prefer! If you've not evolved one of them into their final evolution yet - perhaps you still need some extra Candy - that might be a good way to decide!
