Thankfully, you are able to change your name in MW2 both in the game itself and through the official Activision website. It is a very simple process to complete, although you can only do it a certain amount of times, so don't think that you'll be able to have a new name every day.

If you're wanting to change your name in MW2 through the game itself, then make sure to follow the step-by-step guide here:

  • Head to the Settings menu by clicking on the Cog icon in the top left of the main screen
  • Head to the Account & Network tab, and then hit the Activision Account option
  • This will take you to the Activision Account Summary page, where you can press the Change Display Name button
  • Enter your new desired display name in the text box, and then press confirm
  • Restart your game for the change to take effect

If you're wanting to do it on the Activision website though, here's what you need to do:

  • Head over to the Activision website and sign in to your account
  • Hit the Profile option in the top right
  • Press on the Basic Info tab on the left
  • Hit Edit next to your Activision ID at the bottom
  • You might need a verification code from your email, but once you've entered that, type in your desired new display name
  • Press confirm and your display name will be changed

As you can see, it is a really simple process, so you don't need to worry about any embarrassing past choices anymore when you're sitting at the top of the leaderboard.

When you go to change your name in MW2, you should have at least one rename token available, but they are what you need in order to enact the change. You might have picked up them from some other Activision games that you've played, but once you've depleted your supply, you will need to wait to change your name again.

One of these tokens can be earned every six months, and there is no limit to the number of tokens that you can use if you have them, it is just obviously imperative that you choose the right new name, as otherwise you'll be stuck with it for at least half a year.

So, that's how to change your name in MW2, so you won't need to worry if you're stuck with a bad choice anymore. If you are instead wondering how to change FOV settings in MW2, then read our guide for a full breakdown and comparison.
