If you’re following the Rya quest in Elden Ring, you may have already been given the Tonic of Forgetfulness from Tanith. The Tonic of Forgetfulness poses a difficult question in Elden Ring, do you let Rya live on in blissful ignorance, or do you let her remember everything that has happened at Volcano Manor? For a full guide on this choice, its outcomes, and how to access Rya’s quest, read on.

  • For a full rundown of Tanith’s assassination quests and how to access the Rykard fight, read our Volcano Manor Quest guide.

How to complete the Rya Quest

To start with, Rya will be located north of Laskyar ruins, close to the Scenic Isle Site of Grace where Patches will sit if his quest has progressed far enough. Patches may direct you to Rya if you haven’t already met her. Once you approach her, she will ask you for your help in retrieving a necklace of hers that was stolen.

From there, travel north to the Boiled Prawn Shack and speak to Blackguard Big Boggart. You can purchase it from him for 1,000 runes or kill him and retrieve the necklace off his body, doing this though will close certain events in the Dung Eater’s quest later in the game. Once the necklace is returned to Rya she will issue the player with an invitation to Volcano Manor, explaining that she is a scout for possible Tarnished recruits.

Once you travel in the Grand Lift of Dectus (after locating both halves of the medallion) Rya will be standing close to the lift. Upon speaking with her she will offer you her hand and teleport you both inside Volcano Manor. This is the quickest way to kick-start the Tanith quests and travel to the Manor without walking around Mt. Gelmir. At this point in the quest, if she isn’t here, she may be located at the Erdtree-Gazing Hill Site of Grace.

Once inside, chat to Tanith and she will give you the Drawing-Room Key, as well as your first assassination contract, both this and Rya, will be in a room adjacent to the hallway. It is vital you check back in with Rya in between completing each assassination contract, otherwise, some of her quests can become locked off. Also, if the third assassination contract is completed before you’ve received the Tonic of Forgetfulness from Tanith, you’ll no longer be able to receive it from her.

After the first assassination contract, Rya will tell the player that she’s been hearing strange sounds in the walls.

After the second assassination contract, Rya will no longer be standing in her usual spot in the dining hall, instead, she will be in the door opposite, now unlocked and in her true snake form. She will confess that her real name is Zorayas and Tanith is her mother. You can go to Tanith and ask her about this to get more of the story.

At this point you’ll be able to strike the wall of the room next to Rya, to reveal a secret passageway leading out of Volcano Manor, on the path towards the Rykard boss fight. This path will first take you to the Godskin Noble fight which will need to be completed to retrieve the key item ‘Serpent’s Amnion’ from the altar at the Temple of Eiglay.

Take this back to Rya and she will discover her true origins and that she was not born ‘from the grace of a god’ like her adoptive mother Tanith always told her. If you speak to Tanith directly after this, she will give you the Tonic of Forgetfulness and instruct you to give it to Rya (who has now disappeared) to erase her mind of her origins.

Travel back to the Temple of Eiglay, take the elevator, and work your way uphill past the slugs and Abductor Virgin. There will be an archway across the lava lake, this arch will have a little side room attached, where Rya will be sitting. You will have the choice to either give her the tonic, kill her, or do neither and leave her there. If the last option is chosen, once Rykard is defeated and you return to Rya’s last location, she will be gone and will have left a note in her place addressed to the player.

Should you give Rya the Tonic Of Forgetfulness?

In truth, if you give Rya the tonic you’ll only be pro-longing her ending, and not much changes. She will forget for a time and return to her original location in the manor. Once you re-load the area, however, she will disappear along with the other inhabitants of Volcano Manor.

The only difference is, if you spare her, she will leave you a note explaining that she has set out on her own path to discover who she truly is, and it seems like the happiest of the three endings. Regardless of the option chosen she will drop the same Talisman, the Dedicator’s Woe which increases the amount of damage taken to the player when equipped.
