Elden Ring Iron Fist Alexander has quickly joined the roster of iconic and lovable FromSoftware characters alongside such icons as Patches, and the also recent but equally lovable, Miriel, Pastor of Vows aka the turtle Pope. Elden Ring cements Iron Fist Alexander in our minds with a memorable questline and charming dialogue that befits this giant pot warrior. To learn how to activate the quest for yourself, find Alexander, and retrieve the Shard of Alexander as a reward, read on.

Iron Fist Alexander is one of the Living Jars you may encounter in the Lands Between as enemies in certain catacombs and tombs. Unlike the others, Alexander is a non-hostile NPC that has expressed the wish to become a warrior after leaving his home village of Jarburg. Jarburg is an accessible area of the map in Liurnia of the Lakes, also home to Jar-Bairn, Alexander’s kin and a variety of rare flowers, available for gathering.

Your first encounter with Iron Fist Alexander will take place on the Northern Stormhill in Limgrave. He seems to be half-buried in the ground and requests your assistance to help un-stick him. To do this, in true FromSoftware tradition, you have to hit him in the back with your weapon. This beautiful homage to the Souls games isn’t lost on its audience, as it’s an iconic tactic to hit bosses from behind to inch a win over them.

Once you hit Alexander, he may express pain but keep at it and he’ll eventually spring from the earth, rewarding you with the Triumphant Delight gesture. If the Radahn Festival hasn’t been completed yet, he will mention it to the Tarnished and provides details on what and where it is. If this interaction is skipped, the gesture can be learnt during the encounter that takes place near Jarburg later in the questline.

Gael Tunnel

Iron Fist Alexander will be located at the bottom of Gael Tunnel, past the enemies there and will once again tell the player of his plans to join Radahn’s Festival at Redmane Castle in Caelid. This part of the quest is skippable if the player has already attended the festival.

Radahn’s Festival will require you to travel to Redmane Castle first, where there will be a host of warriors outside in the courtyard, waiting to join in the festivities. You may also find yourself here if you are also following the questline of Ranni the Witch, as this is a vital step to unlocking Nokron, the Eternal City. Iron Fist Alexander will be with the other NPCs waiting for the festival and the Radahn boss fight to take place. Alexander is available to summon during this boss fight, afterwards, he will commiserate with you and tell you that he behaved like a coward and held back during the fighting. As such, he is eager to prove himself more than ever and proceeds to fill his broken body with innards from the battlefield.

Once again, you’ll come across Iron Fist Alexander stuck in the ground, this time by the Divine Tower in the east of Liurnia. Hitting him on the bottom won’t be enough this time, you’ll have to craft and throw an Oil Pot at him to retrieve him from the ground. To craft an Oil Pot, you’ll need the Nomadic Warrior Cookbook (17) to unlock the recipe, a Melted Mushroom, and Empty Cracked Pot for resources to craft it. This interaction can be skipped by proceeding to the next one, but you do get some backstory on Alexander here, and why he chose to leave his home of Jarburg behind.

His jar body being partially broken from Radahn’s festival, Alexander sets out to find materials strong enough to fix him. You’ll next find him after the Magma Wrym boss fight near the Seethwater Terminus Site of Grace. From here, Alexander can be found bathing in the lava just beyond a protruding rock. He expresses how the lava will do just the trick of mending his battle wounds. After speaking to him he will gift the player with 'Jar', which is a unique helmet-shaped to look like a jar on top of the player's head.

This is the last stop for Iron Fist Alexander, and perhaps the most tragic one. Having journeyed across the Lands Between, Alexander decides that he wishes to challenge the player to a duel as an ultimate test to prove he is a warrior. Either he will win and prove himself, or he will lose to the Tarnished and go down in a blaze of glory. You must defeat Alexander regardless and end his questline here. He can be located across from the Dragon Temple Lift Site of Grace, past the plaza and across two square-shaped arches broken on the ground. A dragon may spawn here, in which case you’ll have to defeat it in order to gain access to Alexander.

After Iron Fist Alexander is defeated, the player will receive Alexander’s Innards, the Shard of Alexander Talisman and the Warrior Jar Shard Talisman as rewards.

The Warrior Jar Shard boosts attack power of skills by 10%, whilst the Shard of Alexander greatly boosts the attack power of skills by 15%.

Meanwhile, Alexander’s Innards can be returned to Jar-Bairn at Jarburg, where they will thank the player and express their own desire to become a warrior one day and follow in Alexander’s footsteps. If you rest at a Site of Grace, Jar-Bairn will have left and dropped the Companion Jar Talisman in its place. This Talisman raises the potency of throwing pots.
