The Destiny 2 Ice Breaker is among one of the most highly requested exotic weapons that fans want reintroduced to the game. This infamous sniper rifle from Destiny's past has long been the centre of rumours and speculation, as to whether it will make its debut in Bungie's sequel, as it works its way through its fourth year of release. However, with The Witch Queen on the horizon, could Ice Breaker be making its way back to Destiny? Here's everything we know about the Destiny 2 Ice Breaker exotic.

The Destiny 2 Ice Breaker was an exotic sniper rifle back in the original Destiny, and instantly became a fan-favourite. It's popularity was based on one thing: its replenishing ammo. The Destiny 2 Ice Breaker would replenish one round every five to six seconds, and could not be reloaded. While to outsiders this may seem like a downgrade, with Destiny's energy and heavy ammo needing to be collected - unlike the infinite standard ammo - it can be difficult to fill up your mags at times, especially with weapons like a sniper or rocket launcher.

This made the Destiny 2 Ice Breaker a top pick for PvP events like the Crucible and Trials of Osiris, as players wouldn't need to wait for special ammo to drop. As an added bonus, the Ice Breaker could spontaneously combust defeated opponents, damaging those around them, and even return mags into the round. This is why players have been dying for the Ice Breaker to return. It hasn't been available at all in Destiny 2 and was last seen in Destiny 1 Year 3.

It was long suspected that the Destiny 2 Ice Breaker would make its first appearance in the game with the launch of the Bungie 30th Anniversary event. This event saw the return of some classic Destiny weapons like the Eyasluna hand cannon and 1000-Year Stare sniper. However, the Ice Breaker was sadly missing from the event. However, there is good reason to believe that it will make its return - and with The Witch Queen expansion just around the corner, there is every chance it will be added back then.

Reddit user u/xOnslaught posted in October a screenshot of the top picked weapons for Trials of Osiris tracker app. Among them was the Ice Breaker, which piqued the interest of many fans. This was of course a couple of months ago, but its inclusion of the Eyasluna hand cannon, may lend some credence to the leak, as it was added just a month or so later.

However, if the Ice Breaker comes back there is the potential that it comes with an altered version of its perks, if they are there at all. The replenishing ammo did mess with the meta of competitive PvE and completely collapsed the ammo economy of matches. Additionally, The Witch Queen, will introduce a far more diverse and deep customisation system for weapons, and the Ice Breaker may prove to be a spanner in the works of that new system.

We may not know for sure if the Destiny 2 Ice Breaker is making its return to the game. However, players will be waiting with baited breath, and we'll be sure to update the article as we know more.
