Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies: Maps, Story, Characters, Modes, and Gameplay Features
Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies is one of the most anticipated aspects of the upcoming Call of Duty title. Sure, Campaign and Multiplayer are great, but some players play Call of Duty just for the Zombies mode. The Call of Duty Vanguard beta doesn't offer Zombies, but that does not mean that the details of Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies remain entirely secret. We've got everything there is to know about the Treyarch-developed Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies mode. This includes the story/lore, characters, modes, maps, achievements, and other Zombies gameplay features.
Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies: Story And Lore
Activision and Sledgehammer Games have confirmed that Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies will be a continuation of and intertwines with the Dark Aether Story introduced in Black Ops Cold War. Since Vanguard is based in the World War II era, Vanguard’s Zombies mode will probably be a prequel to the events of the Black Ops Cold War story.
Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies will likely drop players right into the peak of World War II, back to when the Cyclotron triggered the first incident with the Dark Aether and prompted the beginning of the zombie outbreak and the Nazi’s efforts to contain and weaponize it. This prequel story could give Vanguard players a trip through history, visiting Projekt Endstation before it was abandoned by the Nazis.
Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies: Characters
Call of Duty Zombies has featured dozens of classic characters that have stolen the hearts of players over the years.
Because the story of Black Ops Cold War Zombies is based in the 1980s, it’s unlikely that characters like Weaver and Samantha Maxis will appear in the Vanguard version of Zombies.
Instead, characters like Oskar Strauss and Ulrich Vogel may be featured, as the younger versions of these two doctors played key roles in the early days of the Dark Aether story. Alternatively, it’s possible a new cast of characters will star in the Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies mode — like the Soviet Cleaners sent in to investigate Projekt Endstation for the first time.
Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies: Maps
The one and only confirmed Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies map that we know of so far is named Ritual of the Dead. This is a classic Round-Based Zombies map, but it will not be available on launch. Ritual of the Dead should be released with Season 1 of Vanguard, which is set for November 23, 2021.
There are no available details on any other Vanguard Zombies maps but hopefully there'll be something Zombies-based available on launch.
Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies: Modes
On release, Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies will feature a brand-new way to play Zombies. Reputable Vanguard leakers have described this new mode as a mixture of Outbreak, Onslaught, and Round-Based.
Outbreak mode from Black Ops Cold War Zombies was a massive success. This innovative new Zombies mode features objectives and side missions in a semi-open world. While Round-Based Zombie is still popular, Outbreak mode appears to have had a larger playerbase and would explain why Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies will not include Round-Based Zombies maps on launch.
This new hybrid Zombies mode could feature one massive open-world map. A common complaint related to Outbreak mode is the lack of original maps and the fact that instead of one single large-scale map, players would warp around to different isolated, smaller maps. A new Vanguard Zombies mode based on a massive open-world map would reinvent Zombies as we know it and surely draw mass interest.
Round-Based Zombies and other classic Zombies modes will still be a feature of Vanguard Zombies, but this new Zombies mode will be the only one available at launch.
Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies: Perks, Field Upgrades, And Other Features
As expected, Perks will return in Call of Duty Vanguard’s version of Zombies mode. However, Perks have a new name: Demonic Fountains. Likewise, Field Upgrades will be present in Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies. Field Upgrades in Vanguard Zombies have been renamed to Artifacts. Some of the Artifacts players will get to experiment with in Vanguard Zombies include Aether Shroud, Energy Mine, Ring of Fire, and Frost Blast.
Pack-A-Punch, Crafting, and the Armour System from Black Ops Cold War Zombies will return for Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies.
Finally, new Zombie mode features will exist by the name of Sacrificial Hearts and Covenants. The details on these features are slim, but Covenants appear to be accessible in-game via a menu where you can select/equip them. Covenants range in level from one to three and it seems you can equip a maximum of three at once. Given that the definition of a covenant is an agreement, Call of Duty Vanguard Covenants may be a sort of mission/challenge/order system.
Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies: Achievements
Much of the known information relating to Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies was discovered by analyzing a list of leaked Vanguard Zombies achievements. Vanguard leakers have decrypted a total of nine Zombie-related Call of Duty Vanguard achievements, including:
