Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a massive game and its mythically infused expansion only makes it bigger. Yet with a brand new setting and story, how can players jump into this Norse tale and enjoy the new landscape of Svartalfheim? Let's jump into how to start Dawn of Ragnarok, including where to go, how to leave, and how to return to the DLC.

Before learning how to start the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC, you will be thrown into the main game where you can continue on through the base game's content. However, a quick vision will be shown and a new quest will be added (only after the DLC has been purchased). This quest is called Restless Dreams, and requires that you head back to your base of Raventhorpe. Once there and tracking the quest, you will be asked to rest under a tree surrounded by mistletoe. Luckily, you aren't tasked with seeking this tree out, as it will be marked and just to the east of the Raventhorpe camp.

Once you rest at the tree you will enter a vision, where you will take on the role of Havi - otherwise known as Odin. You and the mother of your child, Frigg, are after Surtr who has taken your son Baldr captive. You'll have to fight through a few Muspel enemies - the new fire enemy type - before you will finally face off against Surtr. This can be a difficult boss fight so ensure that you are avoiding the stomping fire cracks, as they will continue to burn you after you have stepped in them, and stay back from the lava as it will near insta-kill you.

Once you have beaten Surtr you will enter another cutscene where Frigg is killed and you are defeated. With fuzzy vision you will be picked up by two figures who have found you in a pile of bodies. At this point, you will wake up as Eivor back in Ravensthorpe and must speak with Valka who can be found in her hut in the north-west area of the base. After a short cutscene you will be asked to pick up mistletoe, and take it to the ritual site just outside of the hut. Light the mistletoe and begin the ritual, which will engulf Eivor in flames. This will finally start the Dawn of Ragnarok DLC, where you will be transferred to Svartalfheim.

  • Once you've started the expansion, you'll want to get right into the Dawn of Ragnarok Hugr-Rip, which gives players all-new mythical powers.

Once you have started the Dawn of Ragnarok expansion, you may want to return to the base game for some more grounded exploration. To do that, open the Svartalfheim map and select the eye symbol north of Eitr, which prompts you to "Wake up". Once you've done this you will wake up in your bed back in Ravensthorpe.

Whenever you are ready to return to the Dawn of Ragnarok story, you'll want to head back to Valka's hut. If you do this more than once, you will wake up in Valka's hut every time you leave Svartalfheim. In either case you want to drink the Svartalfheim potion, which sits on a table next to a cauldron in Valka's hut. You will then awake on the same spot as when you left Svartalfheim.

That's how to start Dawn of Ragnarok in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Once you've reached the mythical realm of Svartalfheim, head over to our guide on the Assassin's Creed Valhalla Hreidmar's Armour guide.
