if you're wondering which units are best in Age of Wonders 4, our tier list will help you focus your resources on those that you need.

Age of Wonders 4 is the latest strategy epic from Paradox Interactive, with a deep roster of different units and unit types, and our unit tier list below will help you to develop a good understanding of the different kinds within the game, and how you should approach them. Here is our Age of Wonders 4 unit tier list.

Age of Wonders 4 unit tier list

10: Spear/Polearm units

Polearm units are very powerful in very specific situations within the game. They are anti-cavalry units, and will devastate any cavalry units foolish enough to pick a fight. However, that is about the extent of their use.

Polearm units are immobile and weak in a straight fight. They do not stand much of a chance against most other infantry, and if used ineffectively, most enemies can simply sidestep them. When they are good, they are great, but you need to use them properly and in the right situations for that to happen.

9: Skirmisher units

Skirmisher units are great all-around units that employ both melee and ranged attacks. They are not jacks of all trades, and masters of none. This makes them very useful in general, but never as good as a more specifically suited unit.

the biggest strength of the Skirmisher is its speed. They cannot be hit with attacks of opportunity, so they can easily jump in and out of combat. This makes them well-suited to moving around the battlefield and harassing enemies.

8: Shield units

Every army needs a solid front line, this is where shield units come into play. A wall of shields is a great way to ensure your army is well-protected, provided you are properly prepared.

Shield units can increase the defence of nearby units, making them useful to have near your more fragile units. Their effectiveness relies on your choices of traits, so if you want to employ them, you will need to have those defensive traits as well.

7: Shock units

Shock units include cavalry, berserkers, and any unit that charges into battle. These units are designed to attack swiftly and cause confusion among the enemy. They break through defences, allowing other units to swoop in and clean up.

Shock troops are great for fast-paced strategies. Sending a Shock unit in first to break up the enemy's defence, allowing stronger units to attack with full force is a great way to decimate armies.

6: Ranged units

Ranged units such as archers and crossbowmen do exactly what you would expect, attack enemies from afar. They can pepper enemy units with arrows, weakening them well before a melee fight even begins.

There is always a use for ranged units in an army, particularly at the back line. Having ranged units to support your front-line fighters will rip through enemies in no time at all.

5: Battle mage units

Much like the ranged units in Age of Wonders 4, Battle mages attack from a distance by using magic. Their spells can do a lot of damage. With the right tomes, your mages can do massive damage to enemy targets.

The only drawback to battle mages is that they are completely useless in melee combat. They need to be kept at a distance from opponents, otherwise, they will not be effective at all.

4: Support units

Support units are also magical units, but they focus their magic on healing and buffing your other units. Like the mages, they are best kept away from the fighting. However, they also need to be close enough to use their spells on your other units.

Having a support unit backing up your offensive units is always a boon. They will keep your attackers alive and healthy, and can even improve their defence.

3: Tower units

Towers are a bit different from other units available in Age of Wonders, but this makes them no less powerful. They are completely immobile, as you might expect, and although they are tough they are prone to being destroyed. They do not have active abilities, instead, they have effects that activate every turn.

There is a wide range of abilities that tower units can employ. They range from summoning more friendly units to buffing your existing ones. Keep them standing, and they will keep your army strong.

2: Fighter units

Fighter units are a catch-all group for many of the units that don't fall under other categories in Age of Wonders 4, and are generally powerful beasts or spirits. They are strong melee fighters, and powerful combat instigators. They generally work best up front, where the action is.

While these units are the most varied, you are going to want to employ them when and where you can. They are very strong, and can often lead your armies to victory.

What is the best unit in Age of Wonders 4?

1: Mythic units

The most powerful units in Age of Wonders 4 are, hands down, the Mythic units. These colossal beings dominate the battlefield. Much like the fighter units they come in many shapes and sizes, but that size is usually huge.

Mythic units have the most power, the most health, and the most demanding presence on the field. They also generally have very specific critical weaknesses, meaning they can be countered. When using a mythic unit, be very mindful of their specific weakness and avoid it at all costs.
