The rift between consoles - despite the weakening of the vicious console wars - is still very real. Now as PlayStation continues to be the champion of single-player story-driven gaming experiences, and Xbox caters to the casual gamer with its massive acquisition of Bethesda, the choice between consoles has never been tougher.

One thing Xbox has the edge on is its ease of access - cloud gaming and Game Pass across console, PC and mobile has made the brand stretch further than just its home console and lets players play their favourite games on the go just as easily as they would from home.

And it looks like PlayStation has been taking notes.

According to Pocket Lint, it looks like PlayStation is finally gearing up to leap into the world of mobile gaming with a flashy new PlayStation mobile controller.

The prototype has been discovered, as Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a patent for the controller in Japan. The controller itself looks an awful lot like you'd expect it to, harking back to the DualShock controller for the PS4 for its visual inspiration.

Of course, mobile games can usually be played with touch controls, but many controllers of this kind have been produced in the past to give gamers a little more control. What's most interesting about this patent may not be the controller itself, but the implications of PlayStation's intent to get into mobile gaming.

What Are PlayStation Planning For Mobile Gaming?

The short answer is we don't really know. That might seem like an anti-climax, but in fact, it's pretty exciting.

There's every chance that, in the wake of Xbox's traversal to mobile with the Game Pass, PlayStation could take a similar approach in porting existing games over onto mobile. It could end up being a huge asset for the company, or alternatively, Sony could produce some new games exclusively for the format.

The list of IPs under PlayStation's belt is incredibly impressive, with some of their past mascots being perfectly suited for the transition - namely Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, or even the likes of MediEvil and Ape Escape.

Whatever is coming from PlayStation for the mobile space, it's exciting, and proof that the company might be a little threatened by Xbox's casual prowess. Nothing like a little friendly competition to up the ante, though, eh?
