We could be taking it to the "Maxis" as the latest rumours claim the villainous Samantha Maxis could be about to make her Call of Duty return in a big way. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War preparing to blast the competition out of the water, what's being billed as the biggest CoD game of all time has us all on tenterhooks.

As well as a history lesson on the horrors of the Cold War, the return of Frank Woods, and a long-awaited sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops, easily one of the biggest lures is more from the Zombies arc.

The new "Dark Aether" storyline is a continuation of the horror-filled "Aether" storyline that seemingly concluded in Black Ops 4. However, with this once again picking up the severed limbs of the undead, is it any real surprise we're expecting Ms. Maxis to rear her head once again? Our first looks at Zombies rattled through what's old and what's new at breakneck speed, meaning you might've missed a few Easter eggs along the way.

In the Zombies trailer, a mysterious woman named "Sam" stepped inside a phone booth and entered a five-digit code. She spoke about "the machine" and warned, "It's happening again". Aside from the fact she's called Sam, players quickly took to Twitter to point out the numbers she dialled in (6-2-9-4-7-) spell M-A-X-I-S on an alpha-numeric keypad. Boom - theory confirmed?

So, it looks like that demonic little girl is all grown up and making her mark on "Dark Aether". Given Black Ops Cold War's melding of new storylines and existing character arcs, the addition of Samantha Maxis makes perfect sense. Still, there's a question of how she fits into Zombies and which side she's fighting for this time. Let's be honest, she doesn't exactly have a great track record when it comes to trying to defeat those brain-hungry munchers.

Samantha Maxis originally appeared in Call of Duty: World at War and served as a secondary antagonist of the franchise after she was possessed by Doctor Edward Richtofen. Zombies may have lost its way over the years, but there's no denying the presence Maxis had on the story.

When we left her in Black Ops 4's "Tag der Toten", the finale of the complicated Zombies lore saw Samantha and Eddie (a child version of Edward Richtofen) walk into an uncorrupted reality that was free from zombies. With the return of Grigori Weaver, it looks like Sam will be part of his CIA task force, however, with adult Maxis does that also mean little Eddie is all grown up and is out there as a potentially good version of Richtofen out there?

Finally, there are larger hints at Maxis' role in Zombies thanks to a mysterious Easter egg of a little girl's creepy laughter in Call of Duty: Warzone. While some think it's to do with an upcoming Halloween tie-in, others expect it to blow the lid off Zombies' main campaign and bring two eras of CoD together. Whatever is going on, consider us suitably spooked.
