Pentiment, A New RPG From Obsidian, Has Leaked
UPDATE: Last week, Project Missouri leaked as an upcoming title from Obsidian Entertainment, the team behind games such as Fallout New Vegas and Tyranny. Thanks to WindowsCentral, we now know the game will be called Pentiment, and is inspired by games like Disco Elysium.
Original story below.
ORIGINAL: Have you ever wondered how crime was solved before DNA evidence and surveillance? Well, we might find out soon, as the latest Grubbsnax episode featured Jeff Grubb revealing details on an upcoming Obsidian Entertainment title that's codenamed Project Missouri. If you want to play a Medieval murder mystery, now could be your time.
What Do We Know About Project Missouri?
Apparently, the mysterious game is being directed by Josh Sawyer - the Lead Designer behind Fallout: New Vegas and the Pillars of Eternity series. We’ve known for a while he was working on a role-playing game with a small team of developers at Obsidian. Rumours have placed the release in 2022, which Grubb backs up.
During the Grubbsnax Show on Giant Bomb, Grubb said that the title would have a 16th Century European setting, meaning it would take place during the Renaissance. As it’s a murder mystery RPG, most of the game will reportedly be investigating the murder and talking to people to build a case. On top of that, you’ll be able to accuse people of the crime. For those of us that aren't Benoit Black, even if you get it wrong, you can continue playing to see the consequences of your actions.
Grubb continued with more details, suggesting it will also feature no combat, which makes us think Sawyer was inspired by the recent RPG from ZA/UM, Disco Elysium. Based on prior information from Sawyer himself, it will likely be first or third-person due to burnout on isometric titles.
What Else Is Obsidian Working On?
Since Obsidian's acquisition by Microsoft, the team has been busy working on a number of projects, running the gambit of big and small games. Obsidian is set to develop a sequel to The Outer Worlds at some point in the future, though it likely won’t release until their Elder Scrolls contender, Avowed, is out. Speaking of which, the latest NVIDIA leaks claim Avowed may be coming late next year.
In terms of the smaller titles, there’s Sawyer's project and the ongoing early access survival game Grounded, which is making good progress and was originally set to hit its full release this year. It could still happen with two months of 2021 to go.
The legendary RPG developer has got a lot going on, and while there's still no sign of Fallout: New Vegas 2, Obsidian is sure to hit the consistent quality they've always had in them now they have financial backing from Microsoft.
