Modern Times Group (MTG) has announced the merger of their esports portfolio companies ESL Gaming and Dreamhack. MTG is set to retain a 91.46% share of ESL Gaming while Dreamhack will be owned entirely by ESL Gaming.

Since acquiring both companies in 2015, MTG had operated both brands relatively independently, hosting events under both brand names. "The combination will create significant shareholder value both short term through the more efficient organization and operations and long term, through the superior products that the new combined entity can offer the market," Maria Redin, CEO and President of MTG, stated in a press release.

The Swedish production company Dreamhack had been founded in 1994 and had started hosting large scale BYOC-Lan events in its home country often in the Stockholm and Jönköping area, hosting large scale tournaments on his stage, live, smaller competitions in the player crowd, digital art competitions, and even live concerts. Later in its history, Dreamhack would become of esports premier tournament organisers, hosting events in many different European countries as well as North America. As such, the company hosted the League of Legends Season 1 World Championship in 2011. In 2013, Dreamhack grew into full cooperation, hosting more events from that point onwards. In 2015, MTG bought the company for 244 million Swedish crona (~£21,100,000).

ESL Gaming has been one of the biggest gaming companies in the world with its head office in Cologne, Germany. The company has hosted some of the biggest esports tournaments in history, regularly filling arenas, especially around Europe like the Lanxess Arena in Cologne and the Spodek Arena in Katowice, Poland.
