Picking the right time to launch a title can mark the success of months or years of preparation, and can often make or break a game.

When two titles in the same genre launch within the same week, it becomes quite a dog-eat-dog world where only the strongest will survive.

To avoid cannibalism of the 2D side-scrolling platformer genre, one developer has now pressed halt on one of the most anticipated releases of the category. The Rogue Prince of Persia has been delayed to allow Hades 2 to flourish.

Evil Empire and Ubisoft eyed its Early Access port of The Rogue Prince of Persia for a release date of May 14, hoping to gain momentum off Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which reignited the series earlier this year, despite being vastly different games.

However, Hades 2's surprise drop has now forced Evil Empire's hand. Either launch and rival one of the biggest sequels in the 2D world or bide its time and launch with delays.

To the surprise of quite a few anticipated fans, The Rogue Prince of Persia has now been delayed. The developers are keen to roll it back a few weeks until "later in May."

Hades 2 causes Evil Empire to pause The Rogue Prince of Persia release

Taking to social media, Evil Empire admitted, "While we have every confidence in The Rogue Prince of Persia, it's not every day that a game in the same genre as you, which is one of the most anticipated upcoming games of 2024, will release into Early Access a week before you plan to do the same.

"We are not prideful enough to ignore the implications of that, and we truly believe that this short delay is the best decision for us and our Early Access journey."

The developers also claimed that this extra time would allow for a more refined launch, giving the studio a few extra days to polish what was already a "hefty" day-one patch.

An exact date for The Rogue Prince of Persia release will be revealed on Monday (May 13), but note that it's still slated for May.
