The NieR franchise has managed to maintain an impressive cultural standing after only two games in the last decade. The action series is an intricate one that has attracted players with its bizarre style, which mixes the charming with the dark and sinister.
Automata reached critical and fan-led love, and Replicant successfully fills in the gaps with a remake of a classic that never saw release in the West. It's been a hot minute since we were a part of NieR's world, and fans are wondering when they'll get to return. It looks like we've finally got an answer, or, it looks like we might have an answer.

It has been confirmed that a brand-new game is in the works from some major players behind the scenes at the NieR team, though whether or not it's actually a NieR game is yet to be determined.
Speaking with former Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi (via Gematsu), NieR producer Yosuke Saito has revealed that he's reuniting with series director and composer Yoko Taro and Keiichi Okabe to develop a new game.
"I’ve been talking about wanting to do something with Yoko and Okabe for some time now. I’ll have something a bit more put-together to say in the not-too-distant future, so please stay tuned. It might be NieR, it might not be NieR. That’s about all I can say for now."
Despite the fact we might not be about to see a direct sequel to a NieR game, it's still an exciting time. After all, any new game from the iconic team is worth getting hyped about.
It doesn’t end there, as Saito adds that another project is in the works: "I’m doing various things with the idea of creating something that does not yet exist. I can’t devote my time to that fully, so most of it has been left to the staff, but it’s turning into something quite interesting. I’m looking forward to the day we can announce it."
NieR fans clearly have a lot to be excited about, even if we don't know if we're getting a NieR game anytime soon. It's complicated, but we'll roll with it.
