Apex Legends Season 17 introduced Ballistic and the World's Edge map rework to the Outlands, but it's weapon mastery that's getting most of the attention.

This new system allows players to level up their favourite guns by using them in-game and over time, unlock exclusive cosmetics.

While the focus for a lot of the community has been racking up countless kills with specific weapons to maximise weapon mastery XP, it turns out this isn't the most effective strategy. Instead, a simple trick allows you to level up guns fast, with the technique requiring almost no effort or skill.

What's the best way to get weapon mastery XP in Apex Legends?

As showcased by Apex Legends YouTuber Grrt, the best way to obtain weapon mastery XP is not by killing as many enemies as possible.

Instead, it's better just to hold the weapon you're attempting to level up in-game for as long as possible. This means as soon as you find your desired gun that you need XP for, never switch to your secondary and just stay alive for as long as possible.

For some reason, the system Respawn has implemented seems to favour the length of time you hold a weapon, rather than how well you're performing with a gun.

After testing this 'OP' method, Grrt gained over 1440 weapon mastery points for effectively doing nothing the entire match.

Will this weapon mastery trick get nerfed in Apex Legends?

While Respawn hasn't addressed this weapon mastery strategy just yet, it seems likely that this will be changed in the future.

The fact the system doesn't encourage you to perform well with a specific weapon defeats the point of fully mastering a gun and devalues the achievement of reaching the maximum level for a firearm.

However, for now, it's well worth using this trick if you want to level up your guns quickly - especially if you're struggling to pick up kills.
