No New Star Wars Game Reveals Until 2022
While we can't wait to jump behind the controls of the Millennium Falcon and blast off to the galaxy far, far away, Padawans and Jedi alike have been wanted not to expect any new Star Wars game reveals until 2022.
2021 podraced into our lives with a double whammy that Lucasfilm Games had been resurrected AND that Ubisoft is finally working on an open-world Star Wars game. Since then, Electronic Arts had vowed to keep making Star Wars games but made no moves on announcing what's next.
Why are there no new Star Wars games until 2022?
The next EA Play Live is just around the corner and expected to shine a light on the likes of Battlefield 2042, Apex Legends, and FIFA 22 - as well as promises of bringing back a forgotten franchise. Unfortunately, these are not the reveals you're looking for, as EA warned not to expect the swoosh of a lightsaber.
Posting on Twitter, EA wrote, "All of us look forward to celebrating with you next year when we share our vision for the Galaxy far, far away!" Burning up our hopes of a big Star Wars reveal like Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar, it looks like those rumours of Star Wars Battlefront 3, and the long-expected Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order 2 will have to be placed in carbonite.
It didn't take long for wannabe Jedis to share their disappointment with EA. One angry player wrote, "This is why you lost the exclusivity license", while another added, "I'm glad you guys clarified, but this is really disappointing news. If this is because you guys don't want to rush development, that is a good thing. But I have a feeling you guys did not dedicate enough resources to the Star Wars IP. very sad". A third concluded, "Always have low expectations, and you'll never be disappointed".
What's going on with Star Wars games?
While EA once had a Vader-inspired Force hold on Star Wars, it recently lost the exclusivity. Despite delivering acclaimed titles like Fallen Order and the success of the Battlefront games, EA got lost in that whole loot box scandal with Battlefront II at the forefront. Added to this, Star Wars: Squadrons sold averagely and was criticised for a lack of content.
As some accuse EA of sleeping on Star Wars, it's allowed the likes of Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games to slip through the cracks like the Empire itself. Added to this, BioWare is working on an Old Republic expansion to celebrate the MMORPG's 10th anniversary. Finally, Squadrons' Motive is reportedly developing a Star Wars action game. Sadly, none of the above is EA delivering a AAA title we'd all expected.
