Do you remember when we all thought we were getting a Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch Pro and it just turned out to be the OLED? Two years on from the underwhelming announcement of the OLED, the rumour mill is going into overdrive that a new-gen Nintendo Switch 2 could finally be on the way.

Much like the back and forth of the Activision Blizzard deal, it's hard to keep track of what's been said about a Switch 2 and the various mythical release dates that have come and gone. Now though, there's more concrete evidence that a true successor to the OG Nintendo Switch could be on the way.

What's the latest Nintendo Switch 2 rumour?

While we'd even written the Switch 2 off as a dream that should be buried, it looks like it's back with a vengeance. Specs of a supposed Switch sequel did the rounds after the massive NVIDIA leak of 2022, which was followed by a supposed release date of some point in 2023.

We were already warned not to expect a Switch 2 in 2023, and if the latest leaks are to be believed, it could be even further away than first thought. According to insider Nash Weedle, Spanish devs have been given devs kits for a Nintendo Switch 2. It's the first we've heard of the Switch 2 for a while, but we'll take it.

This is the leaker who correctly spoiled Metroid Dread ahead of time, and as they are also Spanish, it adds a little more credence to the information. If devs are only just getting kits, it suggests that a release would still be a few years off. Still, the OP claims this is usually the last step before a presentation.

We know Nintendo only just had a Direct, but with Gamescom coming next month, it could be a great time to announce the Switch's successor. After all, it's been six years since the first Switch combined the best of Nintendo's portable and home gaming.

What do we know about the Switch 2?

This positive update comes just days after gamers learned of some interesting tidbits about what the Switch 2 could have going on under the hood. When discussing the FTC enquiry into the Microsoft deal, TweakTown's Derek Strickland highlighted an email from Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.

Kotick reportedly said, "Given closer alignment of Gen 8 platforms and our previous offerings on PS4 and Xbox One, it's reasonable to assume we can make something compelling for NG (next generation) Switch as well." This means it would share the same capabilities as the PS4 and Xbox One.

Stereotypically, Nintendo has never been that fussed with competing against Microsoft and Sony's graphical grunt - often opting for more cartoonish games. Still, 30 FPS didn't exactly affect The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom from obliterating the competition.

Weirdly, Kotick backpedalled on this during his testimony, claiming he'd consider Call of Duty on a new Switch if he had the specs...which he doesn't. At this stage, we're not sure who knows about the Switch 2, whether it even exists, or whether this is just one of the longest gaming hoaxes of all time.
