Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and now Elden Ring. To be honest, the success of the Dark Souls games alone puts FromSoftware ahead of most developers, with a literal genre of gaming (the Souls-like) being named after the developer's work on the hack and slash adventure RPG. But... what comes next?

Despite its Walking Mausoleums and Putrid Corpses, the Lands Between is an oddly alive place that keeps us coming back for more. When we're not using the Elden Ring Randomizer to mix things up a bit, there are hopes for a proper DLC that will give us more than just a few NPCs and a new quest. Away from all of this though, Hidetaka Miyazaki is already thinking about what comes next.

Is FromSoftware Already Working On Its Next Game?

For some, it would be easy to sit back and ride high on the success of Elden Ring for years to come - we're looking at you Rockstar Games. Instead, it sounds like it's back to the grindstone at FromSoft HQ. As well as presumably juggling updates and potential DLC content for Elden Ring, Miyazaki has hinted that there's a new game in the pipeline.

Speaking to 4gamer.net, Miyazaki was asked what's next. The Elden Ring Director responded, "As a director, the next title is already in motion, so I'd like to avoid spoilers there ..." He's clearly not ready to give too much away just yet, but there was a hint of what he'd at least like to work on in the future: "In the medium to long term, I would like to work on a fantasy with a higher degree of abstraction than past works."

In a 2018 interview that announced Elden Ring, there was a mention of two unpublished titles. When pressed on whether the mysterious second title was still in development, Miyazaki said, "Yes. Development is also in the final stages." So, it definitely sounds like this mystery game is the one that he teased back then. Even in the gaming world, four years is quite a while, so we could be closer than first thought to the next FromSoft release.

Could The Next FromSoftware Game Be Bloodborne 2?

When pushed on what he means by "abstraction," Miyazaki added, "In the process of making fantasy titles for action RPGs, including Elden Ring, fantasy ideas and images that are not suitable for that format continue to accumulate, and somewhere they are spit out together." It definitely sounds like he wants to do something a little more out-there, meaning Miyazaki could be taking a leaf out of Hideo Kojima's batsh*t worlds like Death Stranding

Yes, we're banging this drum again. It's been seven years since Bloodborne took us on a trip to the gothic locale of Yharnam, and to be honest, we can't stop thinking about it. There's something about Bloodborne that got under the skin and infected our bloodstream - it's probably why there's been so much love for the Bloodborne demake. Only recently, former IGN journalist Colin Moriarty said, "You haven't seen the last of Bloodborne, I'll tell you that." Most have taken that to mean the long-rumoured remake could be edging closer, but dare we wish for a full-blown Bloodborne 2? Whatever is going on, Miyazaki isn't ready to lift the lid just yet.
